The Sinn EZM series is one of the most revered tool watches, starting from the EZM 1 which was designed to be a tactical chronograph, featuring a crown and pushers which are arranged on the left of the case instead of the usual right. The design is due to the requirements of the German Central Customs Support Group, ZUZ (Zentrale Unterstützungsgruppe Zoll), a special unit assigned to the German Customs Investigation Bureau – much like a special police commando unit. The tactical requirement for the wearer to always have his trigger finger always ready on the trigger, leaving only the thumb to activate the chronograph timing. This requirement mandates the crown arrangement on the left side of the case. The additional advantage is this reduces the stress of the crown poking into the wrist. Also the dial layout is made ultra simple, with the chronograph seconds and elapsed time hand both coaxial to the center, and no sub-dials. This layout can be read quickly and intuitively. The EZM 1 was first released in 1997 with a Lemania 5100 movement. A re-issue with the designation EZM 1.1 was released in 2017, and carried a Valjoux 7750 movement. The original EZM 1 was in a titanium case, while the EZM 1.1 had a stainless steel case. The EZM family currently consists of 6 watches, each designed to fulfil a specific task or occupation, making the collection the ultimate tool watches.

The latest in the EZM series of professional tool watches is the new release of the EZM 13.1. This new model is an extension of the EZM 1.1 with the left orientation of the crown and pushers. However, in place of the ultra simplicity of the EZM 1 dial, the EZM 13.1 is equipped with two sub-dials – a 60 minute counter at 6 o’clock, and a continuous seconds sub-dial at 3 o’clock. The centrally mounted seconds hand continue its function as the chronograph hand. The bezel is already the standard uni-directional diving speced on the EZM 1, but water resistance of the case is increased to 500m of water resistance, from the 300m on the EZM 1, and 200m on the EZM 1.1.

The Sinn literature states that the push pieces utilize the D3 System technology, where the pins and crown shafts are mounted directly to the case aperture for a perfect seal to the case. In conventional designs, the push-piece pin and crown shaft are mounted in the case hole inside a tube insert. The required tube seal not only represents an additional potential source of gas diffusion (see Ar-Dehumidifying Technology), but careless handling can also lead to loss of water resistance with this design. This is because the push-piece pin and the crown shaft can bend in the tube if exposed to lateral knocks, permitting moisture to penetrate. This is a risk which also exists in screwable crowns and push-pieces when they are unscrewed to make an adjustment. The D3-System permits the crown and push-piece to be integrated in the case, providing reliable protection from lateral knocks and the penetration of dust or moisture.

The EZM 13.1 carries the SZ02 movement which is Sinn-speak for Valjoux 7750. Compared to the EZM 1.1 which was a limited edition of 500 pieces with a retail price of SGD 8,800, the asking price of SGD 4,870 makes the EZM 13.1 makes it a good value buy. The main difference, other than the dial layout seem to be the use of tagiment steel on the EZM 1.1 vs standard steel on the EZM 13.1 and limited edition status but the latter has the advantage of a deeper water resistant rating.

When it comes to its features, this diving chronograph is one of the most traditional and yet technically advanced timekeeping instruments.

The EZM 13.1 thus knows exactly what matters during use: a focus on the key essentials in terms of outstanding readability. To this end, we have integrated a factory modification with high functional value into the SINN chronograph movement SZ02. To enable the elapsed times to be read quickly and intuitively, the EZM 13.1 features a 60-minute counter at 6 o’clock instead of a (generally customary) 30-minute counter. It is distinguished by an optimised dial design. To enable clearer readability, the Arabic numerals have been omitted on the EZM 13.1. This adds an optical enhancement to its technically functional focus.

For the highest levels of mechanical stability and durability against external influences, we have equipped the EZM 13.1 with a technology package consisting of Magnetic Field Protection, Ar-Dehumidifying Technology and Temperature Resistance Technology. The independent classification company DNV verifies and certifies the water resistance and pressure resistance of the EZM 13.1 as well as its functionality in accordance with the European diving equipment standards.

Conclusion: The EZM 13.1 is primed and ready for its first use on your wrist!
