Commentary
Interesting release from Hanhart. The dial layout design similar to what Panerai did in the early editions of the Luminor with small seconds at 9 o’clock directly opposite the crown. These layout is not as common as the ones with either a center seconds hand or with the small seconds hand perpendicular to the crown. In the early Panerai Luminor, this was achieved by using a chronograph movement, then Valjoux 7750, and removing the chronograph works, while retaining the continuously running second hand. But Hanhart has chosen to do this differently. The base movement is the Selita SW 200 automatic movement. And a modification is made by Dubois Dépraz to move the seconds hand to the 9 o’clock position. A purer interpretation and execution.
The result is rather stunning. As the watch has this unusual small seconds hand at 9 o’clock, with the rest of the dial laid bare with an expense of negative space. Though the amount of negative space is the same as a regular dial layout with small seconds at 6 o’clock, the eye is not so used to this format, and triggers us to think there is more space. Interesting phenomenon.
The Preventor9 S is all black as its name suggests (S stands for schwarz, German for black), dressed in a black PVD steel case, and black dial. The typical Hanhart dial aesthetics are evident. With large Arabic numerals, the cathedral hands, and the railway track for the minutes around the periphery of the dial. Rather pleasant aesthetics, we think.
At EUR 1.3k for a 100 piece run for 2024, it is an easy justification. The rugged good looks are not only handsome to look at, but also promises to be tough enough for daily use.
Release details
The Preventor9 S now joins the collection of Hanhart, a manufacturer specializing in pilot’s watches based in the Black Forest, Germany. Production is strictly limited to 100 pieces in 2024. With its black PVD case and small seconds at 9 o’clock, this watch is the ideal companion for any adventure.
The basic design of the Preventor9 S is based on a historic Hanhart model from the 1950s. A visual highlight is the small second at 9 o’clock, which has already been used in this form in the past. If you remove the center second and the stop minute at 3 o’clock from the chronograph caliber 42, the small second at 9 o’clock remains. Another characteristic feature is the railway minute track, also used in the past.
The contrast of the plain black dial, combined with bright cathedral hands, bright Arabic numerals and white minute markers, ensures excellent legibility. The hands and numerals are coated with Super-LumiNova® C3 luminous material for night-time visibility.
The stainless steel case has a black PVD coating to match the style of the watch. The “S” in the product name stands for the German word “schwarz”, which translates to black in English. The large pilot’s crown with the “h” of the Hanhart logo ensures perfect operation. The case back bears the serial number and the distinctive Hanhart “h”. The convex, internally anti-reflective sapphire crystal offers perfect protection against scratches, and with a water resistance of up to 10 bar / 10 ATM, the Preventor9 S is the ideal companion for any adventure. Inside the watch is the reliable SW 200 automatic movement with a modification to move the small second to 9 o’clock, built by the renowned Swiss refiner Dubois Dépraz in the finest Swiss quality. In addition to stop- seconds, it offers a power reserve of at least 38 hours.
The black calfskin strap with white contrast stitching and Alcantara interior makes the Preventor9 S comfortable from day one. A black PVD coated pin buckle ensures a secure fit.
Like the entire Hanhart collection, the Preventor9 S places great emphasis on func- tionality, quality and timeless aesthetics. As one of the most traditional manufacturers of pilot’s watches in history, Hanhart continues to set itself the highest standards and is guided by the following maxims: unrivalled precision and reliability, perfect readability and simple, safe operation as well as the best robustness.
