Yooooo Watch Lovers, How you doin? For this weeks Spot the Watch, we are featuring Sylvester Stallone, Hollywood action star, director and screenwriter. For people interested in watches, he is known for helping a certain brand from Florence become very popular.
Sylvester Stallone is known to many as the person that brought Panerai watches to the attention of the general public. A Panerai watch caught his eye in a Rome jewelery store in 1995. He purchased the watch and wore it in the film Daylight which was released in 1996. Sly Stallone has gone on to own many timepieces from the brand and a few special editions were launched in his honour, which feature Slytech on the dial and his signature on the caseback. He even got his buddy Arnold Schwarzenegger interested in the brand.
In some of the films Sylvester Stallone stars in, you will see him sporting a timepiece of note . We would say for the majority of films recently you see him with a Panerai. We do not think its product placement, Sly Stallone just likes to wear timepieces while filming.
In the 2013 movie Escape Plan, he wore what looked like a Panerai PAM 249 Radiomir with a “California” dial. Picking this up while watching the movie would be tricky. We chanced upon this promotional shot below and saw it peeking out from his cuff.
Sylvester Stallone was wearing a Panerai in the 2008 film Rambo, the 4th film based on the character John Rambo which Stallone made famous along with the boxing character Rocky Balboa. He is wearing a Panerai PreA9 Luminor Base on his wrist in the picture below. Our apologies for the graphic nature of the photo. A cool choice of timepiece since the character is a ex military man. Interestingly he also wore a rare Pre V 5218-202A Luminor Marina Militare in the same film. Seems Sly has a habit of wearing numerous pieces throughout films.
For the action packed series The Expendables, in every film you will spot the cast wearing Panerai timepieces. Its a pretty cool touch from Sly to have the cast wearing them. For the first movie each member of the Expendables team was wearing a PAM 332 Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante. The DLC coated case, gives the watch a stealthy look for the film. Funny since the watch was created for the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge.
For the Expendables 2, the Panerai PAM 382 Luminor 1950 Bronze aka the Bronzo was the watch picked by Sly for the cast. Just in case you missed out on one and were wondering why, this helps to explain where some of the 1000 units ended up. The Bronze Panerai re-kickstarted the trend for bronzed case watches.
The Panerai PAM 389 Luminor Submersible 1950 Antimagnetic with ceramic bezel was the watch chosen for the Expendables 3 cast by Sly. The picture below shows it on Stallone’s wrist in the movie. It was assumed since Sly was wearing another timepiece in several shots from the film, he didn’t end up putting on a Panerai. He made sure one was on his wrist at some point of The Expendables 3.
Sylvester Stallone wore his own personal Richard Mille RM32 Chronograph Divers in movie as well. He really does like to incorporate different timepieces for the characters he plays. The photo below shows Sly and fellow cast member of the Expendables 3 Harrison Ford going over some notes. On the wrist of Harrison Ford is a Breitling Aerospace, just like Prince Harry’s in last weeks royal edition of Spot the Watch.
Apart from the RM32, Stallone also owns a Richard Mille RM 52-01 Tourbillon Skull. In the photo below you can clearly see it on his wrist while he is dancing with Arnie! Stallone seems to like patterns with Skulls, so the RM52-01 is a perfect fit.
We will feature Arnold Schwarzenegger at a later point in time, but felt this shot had to be posted of Sly rockin his Richard Mille RM 52-01 and Arnold with his limited edition rose gold Zenith Pilot D’Aeronef Type 20, which looks normal sized on his wrist even though it is 57.5mm!. This was picture was taken from an interview they did while promoting Escape Plan.
In addition to the Panerai and Richard Mille timepieces, Sylvester Stallone has been spotted with a couple of other pieces.
Sylvester Stallone is wearing a de Grisogono Instrumento in yellow gold in the picture below. The de Grisogono has quite a distinctive case shape and looks good on Sly’s wrist.
Another watch spotted on his wrist is the iconic IWC Big Pilot. Recognisable by the onion crown and the riveted leather bracelet. Although in the photo below it looks like the crown isnt screwed down 100% for some reason. For a fairly large sized watch it fits nicely on Sly’s big wrist.
The final watch spotted is a Rolex! Slyvester Stallone used to wear Rolexes back in the late 70’s and 80’s. He has a customised Rolex Daytona which has been blackened with a DLC coating. On his recent summer holiday in Europe, he was seen in photos browsing in a shop window that featured a selection of Rolex models. He came out of the store with a white bag after making a purchase. He was wearing his Panerai PAM 382 Bronzo for the majority of the trip up until that point.
After that he was photographed for the remainder of the trip with a stainless steel Rolex model.
We couldn’t tell at first which model he had bought, but we found a photo of him returning from his trip. The photo was taken outside of LAX. Sly chose the DeepSea SeaDweller! He has paired with it a classic accessory as well. The Cartier Juste un Clou bracelet. Very cool indeed.
We hope you have enjoyed this weeks edition of Spot the Watch!
