Commentary
It is the new bandwagon – being sustainable. If one is cynical, one could comment that its curious how the luxury industry which one of excesses is concerned about sustainability. Or that it is just a fashionable bandwagon to get another chance to tug at the heartstrings for the customers to open their wallets. Even Greubel Forsey is involved with it in some way via their non-animal straps. Some food for thought.
Panerai is, of course no stranger to sustainable materials. Their Submersible eLAB-ID PAM01225 is their first attempt in 2021 to be the most sustainable watch in production. The eLAB-ID has always been a fascinating crucible for Panerai to play with new ideas. And the PAM01225 is a limited edition of only 20 pieces with watch case made of EcoTitanium, a recycled (80% reuse is claimed) aerospace grade titanium. Panerai introduced this material a couple of years ago. Apart from the structural components, the PAM01225 is the first watch to use 100% recycled SuperLuminova on its dial and hands and 100% recycled silicon for its movement escapement; its watch hands and sapphire crystal contain recycled based materials as well. In the same 2021 release, they announced a more commercial release of their ecological concept, and this was the PAM01157in eSteel, as an extension to the Marina collection.
What is new with this release is the use of eSteel in the Submersible collection, and for the first time in Panerai’s history, the use of colour gradient dials – what the industry calls fumé or dégradé. A dial style made famous by Moser, and used diverse watches as in Glashütte Original, and Patek Philippe. Panerai has chosen a fade from dark to lighter from bottom top of the dial. Also new for Panerai is the use of a high gloss ceramic as the insert for the unidirectional dive bezel. The bezel takes the colour cues from the main dial colour, and the three novelties sport 3 different colours – green, dark grey, and blue.
The P.900 movement remains as the workhorse powering the Submersible, and features a 3 day power reserve.
Release details
The measure of a manufacture’s watchmaking capabilities is no longer confined to the sophistication of the movements it produces or the precision of its finishing.
As profound environmental challenges demand solutions, attention turn to practices that reduce the ecological impact of every aspect of the watch industry.
Panerai is committed to developing strategies for a sustainable future, including reducing waste and promoting reuse of materials.
The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM recognizes the critical importance of sustainability goals while maintaining the brand’s established design codes and technical finesse: 72g of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM is made of recycled materials, corresponding to 52% of the total weight of the watch (that is 137g).
They will be available exclusively in Panerai boutiques and online at panerai.com.
eSteelTM has the same properties as conventional steel, including identical chemical behavior, physical structure and resistance to corrosion, making the metal a natural companion for the iconic Submersible collection of diving watches.
An engraving on the crown protection device and inscription on the dial indicate the presence of eSteelTM.
The dial and bezel of the 44mm Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM match in color. Deep blue, gray and green comprise the moody palette of options.
The Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM is original in more ways than one. Never before has the brand used polished ceramic material, but the high gloss surface on the unidirectional bezel is the first of its kind in Panerai history.
And the gleaming mechanism frames another standout element: the dial has a polished finish and color gradient that steadily deepens from top to bottom, giving its appearance a surprising dimension.
The P.900 is an automatic caliber that is only 4.2mm thick and supports a date indication and three-day power reserve.
The Submersible QuarantaQuattro eSteelTM is water-resistant to 30 bar (approximately 300 meters). Two straps are included with each watch, both in the same color as their companion dial.
The focus of Panerai on sustainability is not confined to eSteelTM; the first strap is composed of fabric made recycled PET, while the second strap is made from recycled rubber. A tool that allows interchangeability of the straps and a screwdriver for removing the buckle also accompanies every watch.
