Commentary

To celebrate the Salone del Mobile, a trade fair for furnitures to be held from April 18-23 in Milan, Nomos releases four new square watches, each linked to each other and the furniture fair with the colour pink. It is interesting that Nomos has chosen to make their novelties with a non-watch related trade fair. They were previously participating in Baselworld, but since the demise of the show, have opted to quietly announce novelties on their own. But the choice of a furniture fair is perhaps not totally random. The linkage is in design. Interior designers and watch designers, and the novelties are a result of collaborations with furniture designers.

Tetra in silver with sunburst polishing (“Die Unerreichbare”—The Unattainable), in rose (“Die Wildentschlossene”—The Fiercely Determined), in aubergine (“Die Fuchsteufelswilde”—The Furious One) and in nude (“Die Kapriziöse”—The Capricious).

The Tetra is a full square case measuring 0.000841 square meters. That’s the size of the new “wrist furnishings” by Nomos.

All feature the in-house Alpha caliber.

New furnishings for the wrist

Interior designers also design watches: During the Salone del Mobile in Milan, NOMOS will be launching a whole series of new timepieces—in a bold color scheme that “revolves around the color pink.”

GLASHÜTTE, APRIL 2023. Furniture is composed of mobile elements—from the Latin mobilis—elements that fulfill a function, and which help shape a space. In this respect, it also resembles watches: They, too, are moveable, fulfill a function, adorning and decorating the wrist much like furniture does a room. Which is why furniture designers are well-placed to also design adornments for the wrist.

NOMOS is launching a whole new set of timepieces to coincide with the Salone del Mobile in Milan: four square versions of the well-known NOMOS watch Tetra, this time in a bold “adult color scheme revolving around the color pink,” as designer Thomas Höhnel puts it. Höhnel—a color specialist and interior designer—skillfully plays with tone, color and contrast on the approximately 30 by 30 millimeter dials.

Interior designers are no exception to the rule when it comes to designing timepieces. For example, the Berlin-based designers Mark Braun and Werner Aisslinger, known for their lamps, hotels and sofas, have designed successful watch models such as Metro and Autobahn for NOMOS Glashütte. The new Tetra models from NOMOS Glashütte, designed by Thomas Höhnel, bear names such as “Die Kapriziöse” (The Capricious) and “Die Unerreichbare” (The Unattainable). All of them feature a manually wound caliber and a velvety gray strap made of vegan velour. Available from April 20 from the finest specialist retailers and on nomos-glashuette.com.
