Spot The Watch: What would you wear if you are Dwayne Johnson and saving the world from mutated animals? (spot corrected!)

If you are 6’5” tall (1.96m) and weigh 260lb (118kg) the only appropriate watch that you’d “rock” would probably be one with huge presence on the wrist. We spot Dwayne Johnson, aka “The Rock” wearing the IWC Big Pilot’s Heritage in an Ellen DeGeneres show.

In his recent interview with Ellen DeGeneres while discussing his gorilla research at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund for his latest movie “Rampage“, Dwayne Johnson “The Rock” was spotted wearing the IWC Big Pilot’s Heritage Watch in Titanium case.

The action adventure movie, now in cinemas, portrays Dwayne Johnson (American actor, producer, and semi-retired professional wrestler) as a primatologist whose sidekick is a genetically-modified albino gorilla. Together, they have to save the world from mutated animals.

A closer look of the watch on his wrist:

We initially thought that the watch is the IWC Big Pilot’s Heritage Ref. IW510301, 48mm in Titanium case. One reader (Thanks Laurent) pointed out in the comments section that it could be IWC Big Pilot’s Heritage Ref 501004 instead, which is 46mm in diameter, as he could see a power reserve indicator at 3. We must say with the still we have above, the image quality is not sufficient to be able to positively say that it is either the 46 or the 48, we also don’t quite see the power reserve. We thought we would leave it as this until we can further verify with more photographs. We have confirmation from IWC that he is not a sponsored ambassador, so the watch is owned by him, so we might have a chance to see him wearing it in other situations.

Later, we did further analysis of the video on YouTube, and found that in this perhaps unflattering image of Dwayne, we could see the watch clearer.

Zooming in:

In this closeup, it is clear that there is a power reserve indicator subdial at 3 o’clock.

The second photograph is clearly showing that there is a power reserve indicator subdial at 3 o’clock, and our initial spot was incorrect. Kudos to Laurent for the correct spot. The watch is indeed the IWC Big Pilot’s Heritage Ref 501004 in a 46mm titanium case.

Many thanks to reader Laurent for the correct spot. Contact us by email ([email protected]), and we will send along a small token of our appreciation.

This concludes today’s “Spot the Watch” and although this was not the actual watch worn in this movie, we welcome you to tell us in the comments below which watch you would choose to “rock” if YOU are the one who’s saving the world instead!

Edited at 8pm, 18 April, to add the possibility that the watch might be 46mm instead of the 48mm.

Edited again at 9:30 pm, 18 April to positively identify the 46mm case with power reserve. And revise the spot.
