Commentary
The release comprise of three references. Two which are 3 handed automatic watches with different executions of the dial – one in Deep Blue and the other in Emerald Green, and a dual time reference with an Emerald Green dial.
From the release photographs, the Emerald Green looks quite spectacular as does the blue, especially in juxtaposition with the clean silver bits of the dial. The Perrelet signature of showing the moving rotor is via an aperture ring made to the dial just inwards from the minute chapter ring.
The movement is designed with dual periphery rotors which are eccentrically weighted rings. Each of these rings are attached to each side of the movement, and remain completely synchronised to each other. The effect of the dial side rotor, which is decorated with oblique stripes on one half look like a moving turbine and is a rather fascinating visual. And the case back rotor allows a full visual of the movement through its center.
The LAB Peripheral’s case design is also rather interesting. Both the 3 hander and the Dual Time share the same case, which has a vintage feel somewhat reminiscent of the 1970s. The lugs are big and angularly attached to the cushion shaped case which feature deep coin edge marks on its side. The case is rathr large at 42mm x 42mm, and remains for us to try it out when we are able to get our hands on one.
Release details
Perrelet is world-renowned for developing watches characterised by an original and instantly recognisable design, all equipped with automatic calibres. Why only automatic movements? The answer is very simple. It is a tribute to its founder, master watchmaker Abraham-Louis Perrelet, who invented a mechanism that was absolutely revolutionary for his epoch. He developed the first automatic calibre and it was the year 1777! This date also marks the founding of the Swiss Maison.
The brand is distinguished by its exclusive animated dials. In 1995 Perrelet patented the Double Rotor and in 2009 the Turbine. Two technologies that may seem similar but are totally different. The Double Rotor is functional to the movement and the rotation of the two perfectly synchronised oscillating weights, one on the case back and a second one on the display side, powers the barrel ensuring a more efficient winding force. The Turbine features a propeller-shaped rotor, which creates fascinating optical effects when spinning on the dial and has only an aesthetic purpose.
In 2021, Perrelet takes the automatic movement to a higher level. This happens with the “LAB Peripheral” collection, which introduces the LAB Peripheral Dual Time and the LAB Peripheral 3-Hands models.
This line features a rotor that dances discreetly around the periphery of the dial according to the rhythm of the owner’s wrist. It accomplishes its task, does not disturb the legibility of the watch’s functions and boasts a fine carving with oblique stripes. It is almost invisible but does not hide from a keen eye.
While the first editions have a more classic ‘attire’ in silver and black, with addition of blue only for the model with the dual time zone function, the 2023 creations welcome an emerald green hue on the dials of the LAB Peripheral Dual Time and the LAB Peripheral 3-Hands. The latter is also available in a deep blue shade. Two trendy, contemporary and well-loved colours.
The “LAB Peripheral” collection comes in a 42 mm x 42 mm stainless steel cushion-shape case, water-resistant to 5 ATM. Its soft, smooth lines along with brushed and polished lugs, the embossed rectangles decoration on the case band and the polished octagonal bezel with satin-brushed profile, endow this model with a strong and distinctive character. With its casual-chic style, it is suitable for both elegant and sporty occasions, depending on the outfit it is paired with.
The case frames a finely adorned dial. Its multi-layered structure, the combination of various decorative motifs, such as the central disc embellished with raised vertical stripes and the matt sandblasted ring surrounding it, endow the dial with stunning beauty and add depth. The minute flange matches the dial colours contrasting the silver shade of the peripheral oscillating weight.
“LAB Peripheral Dual Time Emerald Green” provides the practical GMT function highly appreciated by voyagers. It takes place on the counter at 6 o’clock, in the same hue as the display. Decorated with circular grooves it bears the second-time indication, with a mix of Arabic numerals and indices. The day/night indication is revealed through a small round aperture between 10 and 11 o’clock. The hour and minute hands of the two-time zones are treated with white Super-LumiNova.To enhance optimal legibility, at 12 o’clock the date is displayed in two small windows while it’s visible at 6 o’clock on the “LAB Peripheral 3-Hands Deep Blue and Emerald Green”.
The time can be read by means of luminescent hands pointing towards applied cut-out hour-markers filled with Super-LumiNova, emitting white glow in the dark. They emanate from the centre of the dial and are suspended towards the minute flange, giving the impression that they are literally floating on air. This results in an unhindered view onthe most distinctive feature of these timepieces: its peripheraloscillating weight.
The oscillating mass observable on the dial-side is made possible thanks to the clever in-house manufacture self-winding movements, calibre P- 411 for the time-only version and calibre P-421 for the dual time model, both beating at 28.800 vibrations per hour and offering 42-hour of power reserve. The rotor on ball bearings, a 180° plate’s segment, is fixed to a wheel with toothing inside, which engages with a pinion on the outer rim of the movement and transmits the energy to the gear-train winding the mainspring.
The sapphire crystal porthole on the case back, sealed with 6 screws, reveals the balance in action and the rhodium-plated bridges with Côtes de Genève finishing and 3N gold engravings that can be admired in all their beauty given the absence of the rotor as expected from a traditional automatic movement.
“LAB Peripheral Dual Time Emerald Green” and “LAB Peripheral 3-Hands Emerald Green an Deep Blue” are complemented by a calf leather strap with an alligator pattern and white stitching matching the shades of the dial, closed by a steel folding buckle personalised with the brand’s logo.
Once again, Perrelet surprises watchmaking enthusiasts with timepieces with a strong stylistic identity and innovative mechanics that make every owner a true connoisseur of the art of high-end Swiss watchmaking.

Nice design. I would like to see the GMT on all colored dials. What I really don’t understand is why new releases stick with movements that only have 42 hr power reserve. Why do we have 2023 designs with 20 year old power reserve?
good point Allan…I think 42 hours is the standard because it is enough. And the movement does not need the additional stresses from torque in longer running power reserves.
