Paulin Neo
The Paulin Neo is an automatic, mechanical wristwatch in stainless steel, designed in collaboration with anOrdain and assembled by its watchmakers.
It is powered by the robust NH35A movement, made by Seiko in Japan and visible through the display case-back.
At 38mm, the Neo is suitable for female or male wrists. The case features drilled lugs to enable strap changes, and an enlarged, vintage-style hesalite box-crystal to maximise the impact of the unique Neo dial.
For the dial, the team wanted to create something entirely new and crafted, incorporating the fondness for strong colours and sharp design for which both Paulin and anOrdain are known.
To that end, they engaged the skills of jewellery designer Helen Swan, who specialises in working with aluminium – a material rarely associated with handcraft, but which can be brought to a deep and beautiful finish through electrochemical anodisation. The aluminium dials, in rich shades of butterscotch yellow, sky blue or white, are laser cut near Ayr, anodised and dyed in Helen’s studio and then printed in the anOrdain workshop.
In a market sector dominated by monochrome minimalism, Paulin are determined to bring something different: an aesthetic that’s fun, colourful and energised, but nevertheless absolutely rigorous – you might even say nerdy –
in its design values. Accordingly, the bold forms and rich tones of the Neo dial reflect a variety of influences, from Neo architecture to Memphis Group interiors. The ‘Wim’ numerals font, designed in-house, is inspired by the grid-based typeface styles of the legendary Dutch graphic designer Wim Crouwel.
