The Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph is a timepiece that resonates with the spirit of classic car racing.

Here is our quick take based on press release materials.

Quick takes on the new Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph “La Gara Dial”

The latest iteration pays homage to the prestigious Mille Miglia race, an event deeply intertwined with Chopard’s identity. The new dial variation has a circular satin-finish silver. Symbolising the competitive spirit, this dial is called ‘La Gara’, the Italian word for race.

The Case and Dial

The Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph features a robust stainless steel case measuring 40.5mm in diameter. The dial juxtaposes black and white hues, reminiscent of a chequered flag waving at the finish line. This design is otherwise known as a reverse panda configuration, and enhances legibility, a crucial aspect for any chronograph. The iconic red arrow-shaped motif, a signature of the Mille Miglia collection, sits prominently on the dial, serving as a constant reminder of the famed race that the watch is named after.

The open caseback timepiece is fit with a box sapphire crystal and pump pushers for a classic chronograph look. It measures 12.88 mm tall which is a respectable thickness, since most Valjoux based movements come in closer to 14mm. The watch has a 50m water resistance rating. It is also fit with a screwdown crown rather than a regular pull out crown.

The Movement

At the heart of the Chopard chronograph is a COSC-certified self-winding movement based on the ETA 2894-2. The open caseback reveals the modular movement, which is also known for its sweeping minutes counter hand, rather than jumping minute counters found in other chronograph movements. The movement beats at 28,800 vph and has a 42 hour power reserve. The movement is rather well finished with circular grain patterns on the bridge and blued screws. Having a COSC regulation is a plus for better timekeeping, which certifies that the average daily rate of the movement needs to be between −4 and +6 seconds.

Concluding Thoughts

The Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph “La Gara Dial” is a classic design and an elegant addition to the Mille Miglia collection. For those who appreciate the romance of the open road and the tick of a classic motorsports chronograph, the “La Gara Dial” is a fitting tribute to the legacy of the Mille Miglia race. Perhaps a nice memorabilia particularly for participants of the race. But for regular watch fans, the watch may appear less competitive in its price category – S$ 13,400, primarily due to its choice of movement.
