Our Editor in Chief gave his top 5 picks of Baselworld 2016 yesterday and today it is my turn. A couple of the choices that made my top 5 picks, were based on how cool they look in the dark. The others were based a combination of subtle aesthetic updates and value propositions. Without further delay here are my selections from Baselworld 2016.
Rolex Cosmograph Daytona LN116500
Rolex fans and myself included have been waiting for the stainless steel model to receive an update and this year we finally got our wish. The Daytona received a new black ceramic bezel and a subtle dial change for the white dial. The black dial remains virtually unchanged. On the mechanical side the Cal 4130 in-house chronograph movement has been tweaked by Rolex for accuracy of -2/+2 seconds per day. My pick is the white dial with its sub-dials now featuring black accents which makes the dial more legible.
MB&F x Black Badger HMX
I have been a fan of MB&F and Black Badger for a long time. The MB&F x Black Badger HMX just oozes cool! The automotive theme is present from the case design to the top sapphire crystal revealing the “engine block” Black Badger chose to add AGT Ultra luminous material to the “engine” cover to provide lume power! It gives the watch an extra dimension and seeing photos of journalists at the fair under the table at the MB&F booth with torches to accelerate the glowing process, brought a smile to the face! Kudos Max Busser and James Thompson!
Seiko Presage 60th Anniversary Automatic Limited Edition Chronograph with lacquer dial
When the press release became available for the Seiko Presage 60th Anniversary Automatic Limited Edition Chronographs the team at Deployant was impressed by what Seiko was offering for the price. Your choice of either a enamel or lacquered dial with in-house chronograph in stainless steel for under €3000. These represent serious value for money and they look good as well! My choice is the black lacquered dial. It looks very sharp! Well done Seiko!
MB&F x Black Badger Starfleet Machine
Yes the other MB&F x Black Badger Baselworld 2016 release makes my top 5 as well. The MB&F Starfleet table clock when first released showed that table clocks could be designed completely different, to be a piece of art on their own. With James Thompson placing his Black Badger AGT Ultra on certain areas of the table clock, it looks menacing and completely bad ass! It really reminds you of a science fiction movie and the darker forces.
Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe Gray Plasma Ceramic
The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is based on the original models made by Blancpain in the 1950s. The modern iteration is quite quirky with its different shaped hands and lume points on the dial. I have always liked the new Bathyscaphe for some reason, I can’t explain why but it just looks very good to me. The new model released for Baselworld 2016, comes with a very appealing blue dial and blue ceramic insert bezel. The case is also ceramic which may seem an odd choice for a dive watch, but I don’t think that is an issue. How can you say no to a watch with that dial.
That concludes my top 5 picks from Baselworld 2016.
