New Release: Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date and Panorama Date Moonphase

Glashütte Original welcomes a new era of timekeeping excellence with the new Calibre 36. Reminiscent of the Q1 dial signaling superior movements in its Eastern bloc past, Glashütte Original’s Calibre 36 shares the same special status. Through rigorous testing and quality assurance, the Calibre 36 professes the highest levels of precision and timekeeping stability.

After the successful launch of the first time only Senator models, two new versions have now joined the line-up: the Senator Excellence Panorama Date and the Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase.

The Glashütte Original Senator Excellence Panorama Date shows off the manufacture’s iconic jumping date digital display. The secret of its exceptional legibility lies in the mounting of two concentric display discs on the same level, which makes it possible to present the two numerals comprising the date without the central separation bar.

A precise jumping mechanism now enables even greater precision when the date changes at midnight. Refined details transform this useful function into a decorative stylistic element. A softly rounded window integrates the display into the dial in an elegant manner, and two subtle steps enhance, like a passe-partout, the impression of visual depth. The printed numerals are set off in deep black from the ivory-coloured ground.

The Senator Excellence Panorama Date Moon Phase combines the date display with a further characteristic element from Glashütte Original: the moon phase complication. The moonphase display is carefully executed in the firm’s own dial manufacture in Pforzheim, Germany. The round shaped surface of the moon display is achieved through a diamond milling process.

The two models are presented in a 40 mm diameter case, available in stainless steel or rose gold. The case work is a traditional three piece construction with an alternating brushed and polished surfaces. A slim bezel and a domed sapphire crystal, with double sided anti-reflective treatment, provides a supremely unobstructed view of the silver-grained dial and its laser-cut, galvanic black hour indexes and matching railroad chapter ring.

It goes without saying that the new standards established by Glashütte Original for the Calibre 36 governed the construction of both the Panorama Date and Moon Phase modules. Both functions are distinguished, as is the movement as a whole, by an extremely stable construction principle; they also set new standards in terms of user friendliness.

On the stainless steel model the finely drawn minute numerals are also lasercut and galvanized in black, while the red gold version features minute numerals printed in luminous red. Blued-steel pear-shaped hands and a filigree seconds hand render both timepieces easily legible.

Thanks to its fine-toothed gear the moon phase also scores high in terms of precision: In theory, 122 years will pass before it needs to be corrected by one day in order to achieve renewed conformance with the synodic (lunar) month of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.9 seconds.

The foundation of the new Senator Excellence models is the manufactory Calibre 36. Equipped with a silicon balance spring for greater precision, the fascinating part  about the movement is its single barrel spring with more than 100 hours of power reserve. With all Senator Excellence models, refined decorations and characteristic Glashütte construction features assure the harmonic correlation of the movement’s inner and outer beauty.

The latest addition to the steadily expanding Calibre 36 family from Glashütte Original takes a twofold approach to improving stability: in terms of rate precision, a more compact method of construction contributes to stability, as does an innovative bayonet mount used to secure the movement in the watch case.

Each excellence piece undergoes a thorough testing process to perfect the watch’s performance and precision.

The Senator Excellence line keeps a new promise of quality. Every one of these watches, whether three-hand model, with Panorama Date or with Panorama Date and Moon Phase, is thoroughly tested for 24 days – under conditions even tougher than those in force for the demanding German Chronometer certification test. These requirements are the same for all models in the series, independently of the type or number of complications. A special engraving on the case back serves as a seal of quality for every single watch. In addition, the owner of a Senator Excellence is provided with the most important test results for his watch in the form of an individual Examination Certificate. An exclusive online portal also gives the owner the opportunity to review individual test results and to learn about specific test procedures.

  1. I will have that in my collection one day in the near future. I love all three iterations of the senator. Just need to decide which one.
