Spot the Watch: John Wick, a pencil and the A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moonphase

In the first John Wick film, we hear the story of how assassin extraordinaire John Wick killed three guys in bar with just a pencil.  In John Wick 2 we get to see just how efficient he is with the writing instrument.  What does this have to with timepieces?  While watching the film you would never see the watch on the wrist of one assassin who tries to take on John Wick and meets his demise quickly by pencil.

What was the assassin wearing?  A timepiece that was actually a genuine surprise.  He was sporting an A. Lange & Söhne Lange 1 Moonphase.  You can see the signature offset date (reads 1), the moonphase and the date pusher above the shirt cuff.

John Wick played by Keanu Reeves taking out an assassin in John Wick 2. The assassin happens to be wearing an A Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Moonphase

Was the watch chosen by the prop department?  Highly unlikely as the scene never shows the watch at all in any detail.  Did it belong to the actor?  This is possible as the person thought the watch suited his attire.  We discussed whether the watch was real at length and from analyzing the scene, we thought there was a high likelihood it was a legitimate Lange 1 Moonphase.

We can’t tell if its a white gold or platinum model, so a picture of the platinum version is below for reference.  Note this is the first generation of moonphase, which does not have the Day/Night indicator.
