Review: the new The Longines Legend Diver in Gray

The Longines Legend Diver, since its inception in 2013, has been one of the biggest hits from the Switzerland-based watch manufacturer. The watch is part of the brand’s popular Heritage collection, which draws its inspiration from its archives of more than 185 years. This year, Longines has released a new dial color iteration to this popular line. A gray gradient dial with matching gray nato strap.

The Legend Diver in Gray

The Legend Diver is both functional and stylized. Its compressor design was contemporary of its time, providing a sleek timer feature for divers.

The Case and Dial

The stainless steel watch measures 42mm in diameter and 12.7 mm in height. It’s fitted with a boxed sapphire crystal which resembles the plexi glass of the original. It is essentially the same watch as previous Legend Diver iterations, but with a new gray gradient dial, and matching patina colored luminous markers.

The dive watch is rather slim overall, considering its raised sapphire crystal. The case is fully polished, with slightly tapered lugs. The compressor case is fit with an inner rotating bezel that is configured via the crown at 2 o’clock. The crown at 4 adjusts the time, and date.

The Movement

The Legend Diver is fitted with an ETA-based movement. The self-winding engine beats at 25,200 bph, and it boasts a decent power reserve of approximately 64 hours. This is notably the improved version of the ETA 2892 movement that it is based on, in which the latter has a lower power reserve of around 42 hours.

The watch is fitted with a solid case back, hence we have no clue as to the level of finishing of the movement. Based on its price point and our observations on the other models, we reckon that the finishing of the Calibre L888 should be typical with most of the other mass-produced entry-level watches – nothing out of the world, but mostly industrial-grade refinement. For its price point, we think that it is reasonable.

Concluding thoughts

Longines have often produced interesting pieces for its Heritage collection, and the new Legend Diver is no exception. The new gray colored dial comes as an addition to the growing colorways namely blue, beige and burgundy of the model. It gives fans of the LLD more options to choose from, without deviating from the iconic design of the watch. The watch is priced at S$3,590.00.
