Seiko Prospex HBB006 “Blue Tears”: What is New
Seiko has taken their tried and tested Prospex diver’s watch formula and given it a regional character in this new Thong Sia Group Exclusive Limited Edition. The inspiration is the bioluminescent phenomena known as “Blue Tears”. A a natural nighttime phenomenon where microscopic marine organisms emit a bright blue or blue-green light when disturbed by waves or movement. The appeal of the watch is how Seiko translates this idea into the dial, bezel and hands, rather than just a poetic name to a just another blue watch.

The deep blue sunray dial is the focal point. Under light, the sunray finish gives the dial the impression of some movement. The blue seconds hand adds a small but effective point of contrast. The dark blue bezel completes this blue monochromatic theme. At night, the Lumibrite on the hands and indices glows bright, adding character to this watch, and reminiscent of the “blue tears” phenomena. The base watch – the Prospex remains unchanged from its other versions. The knurled crown and knurled bezel sides are particularly attractive and remains.

Seiko’s interpretation of “Blue Tears” shows creative restraint. Rather than covering the dial with elaborate decoration, the design relies on colour and finishing. The deep blue sunray dial provides the visual foundation, with the blue seconds hand and dark blue bezel reinforcing the theme. The effect is particularly appropriate for a diver’s watch – calm in daylight, while in the night, the lume becomes the dominant visual element in darkness.

Each watch comes with both the 3 link stainless steel bracelet and a navy-blue silicone strap, giving owners flexibility in changing the looks when worn. The complimentary Prospex picnic mat is an amusing launch extra and fits the lifestyle aspect of the “Blue Tears” story, but for us it is secondary. The watch itself is the story: this is a beautiful, a blue-themed Prospex with a specific regional distribution and a limited production run.

Normally the Seiko Prospex at nearly 42mm and 12mm thick wears prominently on the wrist. As it should. After all, this is a diver’s watch, made to withstand 200m of water resistance. But should sit comfortably on most wrist sizes without overhang, or unbalanced weight distribution.
Pricing Notes
The price of the Prospex HBB06 “Blue Tears” is SGD 953. This an attractive price point, just below the SGD 1k mark. The closest regular version is perhaps the HBB001, which is essentially the same watch in a different colourway, and a larger limited edition of 9999 pieces with global distribution. The HBB01 retails at SGD 850, but is currently listed as sold out. Also the HBB003 and HBB004, in either yellow or orange dial colours at SGD 899 with a Asia Pacific distribution and limited to 2500 pieces each. However, the HBB01, HBB03 and HBB04 lack the second silicon strap. If required, the silicon strap is purchased separately. These typically go for about SGD 150. The HBB06 “Blue Tears” comes with both steel bracelet and additional navy-blue strap.
