Details:

The Alliance of British Watch & Clock Makers is due to host its first ever member-exclusive Open Dial event with Roger W. Smith OBE scheduled to take place at 5pm GMT on March 10th.

Event overview

  • The Open Dial will be hosted by Rikki Daman, host of the popular Scottish Watches Podcast
  • It will give attendees an in-depth behind the scenes look at the Roger W. Smith studio on the Isle of Man
  • It will feature an exclusive world-first tour of the George Daniels studio which Roger has been the custodian of since 2013

There will be a live Q&A with Roger Smith for which members can submit questions in advance. The Open Dial will give a unique behind the scenes tour of Roger Smith’s studio, with in-depth insight into his working methods, his continued advancement of the co-axial escapement and an update on his pioneering research in nano-materials technology.

This will also be accompanied by a first-time tour of the George Daniels studio. Dr George Daniels CBE (1926-2011) – the inventor of the co-axial escapement, and Roger’s mentor – bequeathed the entire contents of his Riversdale studio to Roger W. Smith to assure the continuation of his work. It was George’s wish that this important collection of horological work benches, tools and equipment be preserved and used by Roger W. Smith in the maintenance of Daniels’s legacy watches and in continuation of Daniels London, as well, of course, in the making of Roger’s own watches.

In addition to the tour of Roger’s studio and the George Daniels studio, there will be a live Q&A hosted by Scottish Watches Podcast host Rikki Daman where Roger will take questions from the audience (which can be submitted in advance via email or on the day during the event).

“As co-founder of the Alliance, it’s a privilege to host our first Open Dial and I’m excited to welcome our members to take an exclusive look behind the scenes at my studio, which was purpose built to house the entire creation of a watch under one roof. Having just completed my 100th watch with the first of my Series 4 watches, we’re at a real milestone and it feels apposite to share our work in this special way with our members.”
