Grand Seiko renews its core flagship Evolution 9 collection with nine new references. Five feature the 9R Spring Drive and four with the 9S mechanical high beat movement. We had our hands on with the watches, and here is the first highlight of the novelties – the SLBG007 Spring Drive Lake Suwa moonlit.

The case, dial and hands

The case retains the signatures of the Grand Seiko GS44 design. This remains largely unchanged. The SLGB007 comes in a High-Intensity Titanium case, with its characteristic bright silvery hue. The case is finished with contrasting polished and brushed surfaces.

The highlight of any Grand Seiko watch is the dial. As usual, the dial is meticulously made. With the indices which magnificently finished in alternate brushed and zaratsu polished surfaces. This gives the faceted chamfers and cut slots a vivid, three dimensional quality as it reflects light in various angles of incidence. The hands are large, and faceted with contrasting surface treatments. The date window at 3 o’clock is framed.

But the most prominent feature of the dial is the black textured surface. The impression is similar to the shimmering of the lake surface in the moonlight. This is a new colour for the Grand Seiko. As we understand it, the dial is cut from a large sheet with the patterns pressed on the surface. The textured patterns are then treated to give the impression of the inky depths of the Lake Suwa at midnight.

The novelty now comes with a three step micro-adjustment clasp. The adjustment is effected by a quick and simple push of a button within the clasp in 2mm increments. This adjustment is tool free.

The movement

The movement installed is the new Spring Drive U.F.A. Caliber 9RB2. This caliber debuted in 2025 with the industry reacting very positively to the novelties released then.

The movement is designed to be completely mechanical, powered by the mainspring, though the regulation is via a glide wheel whose speed is controlled via electronic braking in reference to a quartz oscillator. The crystal and integrated circuit of this reference device is enclosed in a vacuum sealed chamber. Vacuum sealing minimises the influence of external factors like temperature, humidity, static electricity and light, which may interfere with the high accuracy. The quartz crystal is also grown in-house and aged to stabilise its performance. The overall achievement is a an annual accuracy of ±20 seconds, making it the most accurate wristwatch movement on the market powered by a mainspring.

Movement finishing is at the same high level as with the mechanical Grand Seiko watches.

Competitive landscape

As a spring drive caliber is the movement installed, the landscape is barren except for other Grand Seiko Spring Drive watches. This novelty crop of the Evolution 9 offers three other models in stainless steel – the SLGB009, SLGB011 and SLGB013. Other than the steel case and bracelet, all other aspects of the watch is identical to the SLGB007. All have the Caliber 9RB2 movement and the new micro-adjustment clasp. The only difference is the dial. The SLBG009 has a white birch dial with vertical pattern inspired by the forests near Shinu Watch Studio. The SLBG011 has an emerald green dial, inspired by the Atera River in Nagano. And the SLBG013 features a blue Lake Suwa dial. Another model – the SLGB015 is also offered identical to the SLBG013’s blue dial but in a steel case of 37mm.

And of course, the SLGB003 released in 2025 at the launch of the Spring Drive U.F.A. watches remain an alternative. Both are the same watch, in the same High Intensity Titanium case and bracelet with the same movement but with a different dial. And have the same retail price of SGD 14.5k.

Concluding thoughts

The SLGB007 remains as attractive a value proposition as its forebears in the Grand Seiko Spring Drive family. The watch is handsome, and rugged. The watch wears very nicely on my 180mm flat wrists. It should wear well on smaller wrists as well, though those with tiny wrists below 150mm might find the alternative SLBG013 in the 37mm steel case a better fit.

I find the black textured dial to be really reminiscent of waves on a lake in the moonlight. And to be aesthetically very pleasing. Historically and anecdotally, it is a superb performer, keeping excellent time for the full duration of its 72 hour power reserve. Indeed, the promised performance of ±3 seconds per month is even more accurate than the standard Spring Drive’s ±15 seconds per month.
