Remembering Günter Blümlein: an icon of the century

Today marks the 24th anniversary of the death of Günter Blümlein. I just want to take a moment to remember this great man, whom I have had the privilege to meet and interact with for many years before his untimely passing at only 58 years old.

I have written several In Memoriam articles over the years.

Happier times: A photograph of Günter Blümlein and me, at the Lange booth in Baselworld 2001. Blümlein wore his platinum No 1/50 Tourbillon Pour le Mérite that day. We had a robust debate over dinner on the novelty of the day: the Langematic Perpetual Calendar.

I learned of his passing and posted this note in Timezone.com forum:

Date: 10/1/01 10:25 Günter Blümlein Died

I was saddened when Dr. Frank Muller and the local Lange Authorized Dealer called me earlier today to inform me of the news.

Mr Blümlein is an icon in the modern watchmaking industry. This loss is not only a great loss for Lange Uhren, LMH and Richemont, but for the entire watchmaking industry and the wold at large.

My prayers are with him and his family.

I will be attending the memorial service in Schaffhausen this Friday as a representative of collectors worldwide. If there is anything you would like for me to do/say on your behalf, please let me know.

I have also written several eulogies over the years.
