Commentary

We find this a very interesting extension to the Tissot PRX Powermatic series, which now stands at 62 references. The original 40mm PRX Powermatic 80 was a great value proposition when it was released, and still continues to be a strong value buy at SGD 1.2k for a watch in stainless steel with steel bracelet, which has a automatic winding movement with a 80 hour power reserve. A smaller 35mm version was released at also a very competitive SGD 1k. And now Tissot has upped the ante with this novelty release. Two new and different case metals, and in a new 38mm size. And still at the excellent value for money retail price.

First, the titanium. Three references are released. Two with full case and bracelet in titanium. One in a deep blue dial paired with nickeled baton hands and applied indexes, and an anthracite variant that pays tribute to titanium itself, contrasted with rose-gold-coloured hands and indexes. Both feature the signature waffle-patterned dial, reinforcing the watch’s bold, modern spirit while ensuring impeccable legibility. The third reference in titanium comes with a rubber strap. This novelty now comes in direct competition with the recently released Citizen Zenshin priced just under SGD 1k.

Then the piece de resistance. The PRX in Damascus Steel. What is interesting is that the entire case and dial is made from Damascus steel. This is a rather significant step for the metal, which is typically only used in more exotic and artisanal watches. But here, we see it in a Tissot, as mainstream as watches come. And they do not short cut the process. Two grades of stainless steel are layered, folded, heated and repeated till 70 layers are made, forming a dense, multilayered block. It is not difficult to calculate that this requires the metal sheet to be folded 6 times to achieve 64 layers. The block is then cut to form the case and the dial. The characteristic Damascus Steel pattern of layers is quite a beauty to behold. But this process does not only provide a material with great aesthetics, but also with increased strength. Nicely done, Tissot. And to propose this at this price point is quite an excellent value proposition.

The movement, as its name suggests, is the same movement as used in all others in the collection – namely the Powermatic 80.

Release details

For over a century, Tissot has pushed the boundaries of traditional watchmaking through bold material choices — a pioneering spirit that continues today with two major innovations: the introduction of Damascus steel for the first time in its history, and the arrival of titanium in the PRX collection, bringing lightness, comfort, and a refined contemporary aesthetic to the line.

Since its early days, Tissot has consistently challenged conventions through the daring use of materials. In 1969, the Sideral introduced fiberglass to watchmaking — lightweight, resilient, and radically modern. In 1971, the Idea 2001 became the world’s first mechanical watch made from synthetic materials, featuring the innovative “Sytal” system, which effectively eliminated the need for lubrication. These innovations paved the way for even more daring creations, such as the RockWatch in 1985, crafted from granite and other stones. Drawing on this heritage, Tissot has revisited its emblematic designs in recent years: forged carbon was reintroduced in the Sideral and the PRX, while the RockWatch was relaunched this year to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a contemporary reinterpretation.

Today, this spirit continues with the reimagining of the Tissot PRX Powermatic 80. Three new 38 mm models join the collection, striking a balance between timeless sophistication and technical modernity. Two editions feature a titanium case and bracelet, offering exceptional lightnessand a refined, contemporary aesthetic that enhances the PRX’s signature design. Alongside them, a bold new model in Damascus steel combines resilience, artisanal prestige, and a truly unique visual identity. Historically celebrated for its layered patterns and exceptional strength, this material has been admired for centuries in blades and decorative arts for its beauty and craftsmanship. Each case and dial showcases a meticulously shaped, one-of-a-kind pattern, created with modern techniques that honour this ancient material while adapting it to watchmaking.

The Craft of Modern Damascus Steel

The creation of a Damascus steel case and dial blends traditional inspiration with modern technology. Two grades of stainless-steel powder are carefully selected for their contrasting properties. These powders are layered alternately in a mold, laying the foundation of the Damascus motif. The mold is then subjected to hot isostatic pressing — an advanced process combining temperatures close to fusion with pressures up to 1000 bar. At this stage, the powders bond at the atomic level, forming a dense, multilayered block of steel comprising 70 successive layers.

This block is CNC-machined with precision to create the cases and dials. Finally, a combination of polished and satin finishes reveals the striking interplay of light and shadow. The result is a pattern that is always unique, echoing the heritage of traditionally forged Damascus steel while introducing a contemporary approach tailored to watchmaking.

With these new PRX models, Tissot continues to pioneer the use of innovative materials, exploring new possibilities in design, craftsmanship, and performance. Bridging heritage with modern creativity, the brand demonstrates once again that watchmaking is as much about mastering matter as it is about measuring time.
