Sinn released a whole slew of watches for 2020 with 8 novelties being fielded in 3 collections. From a new U50 series in their signature submarine steel, to the 1739 elegant, dressy watches, and a line extension for the popular 556 series for pilots.

Overview: Durability and clear readability in a 41 mm diameter size that is comfortable to wear: you will find these properties in the new U50 series. Appealing design elements, such as those just waiting to be discovered in the 1739 St I 4N and 1739 St I S. The 1739 Heimat has a dial is inspired by the traditional diamond pattern of Frankfurt’s popular cider glasses. Striking form, sparse dial design, superior readability – characteristic SINN features which highlight the similarities between the 556 series and our pilot and navigation cockpit clocks. The model 556 A RS and 556 I RS has a special feature: The red second hand is in a harmonious contrast to the black of the dial and the white of the numbers and indices.
The new U50 Series
Three new watches in this series are released, all in German Submarine Steel and with the Sinn patented Tagiment coating. All are also tested for diving use by DNV GL who verifies and certifies pressure resistance to a diving depth of 500 metres (= 50 bar) and temperature resistance and functionality in accordance with the EN 250 / EN14143 European diving equipment standards.
Commentary: The U50 series is a new collection following in the footsteps of the popular U1 series. While it is not clear if this is the successor to the U1 in the Sinn release literature, the new U50 have similar aesthetics in a smaller 41mm case size, compared to the 44mm of the U1. Both are in the German Submarine Steel, and if the U1 is anything to go by, is denser than regular stainless steel. Edit: We were just told that the U1 will continue to be available.
All the U50 series use the same Sellita SW300-1 movement, and feature the same 60 click bezel on a matte black dial with red accents. The U50 models differ by the surface treatment, though all are have scratch resistant tagiment coating as the base. The U50 comes in a grey steel finish made by bead blasting, while the U50 SDR has the same case, but equipped with a black bezel. The U50 R features a hard black coating over the tagiment, with the same black bezel as the SDR.
The 1739 family
Often it’s details that turn an extraordinary watch into something exceptional. Details such as sophisticated technical features. Or appealing design elements, such as those just waiting to be discovered in the 1739 St I 4N. Namely, the stylishly arranged golden hands, the appliqués, meticulously attached by hand and the silver electroplated dial with sunburst decoration – an interplay that creates a highly exquisite and elegant feel.
This timelessly classic design, skilfully incorporating elements from previous styles and thus illustrating a sense of tradition, is reinforced by the slightly curved, high-quality sapphire crystal. Such details define and characterise the overall appearance of this magnificent watch, which has a diameter of 39 mm.

The Heimat pays homage to our home city, Frankfurt am Main. The extremely fine rhodium-coated relief dial is inspired by the traditional diamond pattern of Frankfurt’s popular cider glasses, also known as Gerippte. The three-dimensional diamond pattern creates an incredibly vibrant interplay of light and shade on the cider glasses. A close look at the relief on the dial reveals that it is just as vibrant and three-dimensional, with a wide range of surface characteristics – from polished to matte silk. The effect is a result of the electroforming technique used in the production process. This method allows complex three-dimensional surface structures to be achieved with a high degree of precision. The relief dial is coated with rhodium, a precious metal similar to platinum, which gives the dial an exquisite silver-white shine.
Commentary: Three new watches in this collection, all designated as 1739. In three dial variations. The first comes with a silver electroplated dial with sunburst pattern using gold hands and gold appliqué indices. The second is in a electroplated black dial with sunburst pattern with rhodium-plated hands and appliqués. And the third is the Heimat with its special relief dial.
The movement is the Sellita SW300-1 movement, case size 39mm.
The 1739 is Sinn’s answer to a dressier watch, having hewn their reputation as the ultimate tool watch. This is not the first time they attempted this genre, and remains to be seen if they will be rewarded for venturing away from their standard playbook.
The 556 series
Next up, an extension to the 556 entry level line.

The accentuation of the hours, minutes, seconds and the date plus the satinized stainless steel case are what give the watches their sporty yet elegant appearance. The crystal of the 556 watches is made from sapphire crystal, as is the transparent back which provides an intriguing insight into the filigree mechanical movement inside.
Commentary: The 556 series is the entry level into the Sinn pilot watches, and which have many variants, some with illustrious histories since it was introduced in 2007. The 556 is now extended by two models, both with the red seconds hand instead of the standard white. A very small change with the red seconds hand, but its a big change in the aesthetic. They differ from each other only in the dial design. The 556 A RS uses Arabic numerals for the cardinal points of 3, 6, 9 and 12, while the 556 RS has bar markers all round. Movement used is the Sellita SW200-1. And as with all Sinn watches, the clarity of the layout is excellent, even in the dark.
Compared to the other releases today, this entry model uses the Sellita SW200 movement, a copy of the ETA 2824-2, though, the Sellita calibre has an extra jewel (26 rubies vs. 25 for ETA). The Sellita SW300 is a copy of ETA’s higher-end 2892.
