Seiko Presage is renowned for producing watches that combine traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern technology. The latest additions to the Sharp Edged Series, the SPB415, and SPB417, are no exception. These two watches feature the new Caliber 6R5J, an automatic movement that offers a power reserve of 72 hours when fully wound. The watches are also upgraded with a dual-curved sapphire crystal that enhances legibility and a mirror-finished facet that adds an extra sparkle to the design.

The Case and Dial

The SPB415 and SPB417 feature a 40.2mm stainless steel case with super-hard coating and a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating. The asanoha pattern on the dial, which is a traditional Japanese motif associated with growth and success, comes to life through stamping, color gradation, and lap coating on the top layer, creating a rich texture. Each watch’s dial is also imbued with a traditional Japanese color, with the light one called shironeri and the dark dial aitetsu, or indigo iron. The new design of the hour markers and seconds hand harmonizes perfectly with the asanoha pattern, with the markers pointing toward the center of the dial and the seconds hand having a more pronounced and angular counterweight with a spiked tail.

The Movement

The Caliber 6R5J movement, which debuts with the Sharp Edged Series, has a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour (6 beats per second) and a power reserve of 72 hours (3 days). The movement has indications for the hour, the minute, and the seconds, as well as a sub-dial for 24-hour indication at the 6 o’clock position. An eye-catching cutout at the 9 o’clock position shows the signature asanoha, or “hemp-leaf” pattern, which matches the same pattern seen on the dial surface. The movement’s escapement can be viewed and enjoyed through this opening.

Concluding thoughts and price

The latest additions to the Presage Sharp Edged Series are a perfect blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern technology. The dual-curved sapphire crystal and the mirror-finished facet add an extra touch of elegance to the already stunning design of the watches. The Caliber 6R5J movement offers a power reserve of 72 hours, making it an ideal watch for those who do not want to worry about winding their timepiece regularly. The SPB415 and SPB417 will be available in June 2023 at Seiko Boutiques and select retail partners worldwide, with a recommended retail price of €1,300 for each new creation. Overall, these watches are a perfect addition to any watch lover’s collection, with their unique design and advanced features.
