Commentary
The most interesting thing about the SB10 250th Anniversary is not the complication but the material and who made it. American copper was CNC-engraved in the United States by Ron Elkins, hand-patinated in Scotland by Chris Alexander of The Dial Artist, and assembled in France by Armand Billard. Three craftspeople from three countries connected by a shared chapter of history. The copper cabochon sits fully exposed rather than protected behind crystal, which means it will change with use. The patina applied by Chris Alexander continues to develop naturally with every touch and every year. The watch is designed to look different in ten years, and differently for each owner.
The jumping hour uses a wide aperture at 6 o’clock with numerals designed by typographer Simon Schmidt, which addresses the legibility problem that makes most jumping hour watches impractical to read at a glance. Time is displayed entirely through two sapphire discs rather than hands, with the minute disc glowing turquoise at night via Super-LumiNova BGW9. The movement is the La Joux-Perret G101A, a reliable Swiss ebauche rather than a manufacture calibre. At 5.2k euros excl. VAT, you are paying for the dial craft and the complication module. For its tenth anniversary, Sartory-Billard unveils the SB10. The watch traces its origins to the SB08 project presented in 2024, a concept watch that explored an extreme architecture combining sapphire elements, advanced complications, and a radical approach to time display: a large aperture for the hours, a fluid reading of the minutes, and a central surface freed from the traditional dial. The SB10 is that idea distilled into a producible watch, and marks the brand’s first complication.
Created as a limited edition to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States, the SB10 250th Anniversary draws inspiration from the material behind one of the nation’s most enduring symbols: the Statue of Liberty. Rather than reproducing the monument, this edition takes American copper as its starting point, specifically the slow transformation of its surface through exposure to oxygen, moisture and time that produces the distinctive blue-green patina recognised around the world.
American copper is individually CNC-engraved in the United States by Ron Elkins, creating a pattern inspired by the American flag moving in the wind, carved in deep relief. The copper is then hand-patinated in Scotland by Chris Alexander of The Dial Artist, using techniques that accelerate the same natural oxidation that would normally take decades. The watch is assembled in France by Armand Billard.
Unlike a traditional dial protected beneath a crystal, the SB10’s cabochon remains fully exposed. Every engraved groove and nuance of the patina can be explored with the fingertips. Over time, repeated contact gradually wears the protective lacquer, allowing the copper beneath to continue its natural evolution. Like the Statue of Liberty itself, every watch will slowly develop its own character. No two will age in exactly the same way.
At 6 o’clock, a wide aperture reveals the hour on a sapphire disc. The aperture has been deliberately enlarged for legibility, with numerals designed specifically by typographer Simon Schmidt in a format nearly twice the size found on more traditional jumping hour watches. The SB10 has no hands. Time is displayed entirely through two ultra-thin sapphire discs, approximately 0.2mm thick. The hour disc jumps 30 degrees every 60 minutes. The minute disc moves continuously around the cabochon, with a red marker tracing the periphery against a Super-LumiNova BGW9 ring that glows turquoise at night.
The SB10 is powered by the Swiss-made La Joux-Perret G101A automatic movement with a 55-hour power reserve, paired with a patented jumping hour module. Both hour and minute discs are sapphire, housed in a 39.5mm stainless steel case.
The SB10 250th Anniversary is available to order exclusively from July 4th to July 11th, 2026. First deliveries are expected at end of 2026.
