Commentary
S.U.F is Stepan Sarpaneva’s secondary brand with watches which are less elaborate than his mainline Sarpaneva lineup. The collection is the diving watch Vetehinen, named after a Finnish vessel which was in service during the Second World War.

The case is water resistant to 300m, and intended as a tiny submarine for the movement strapped to the wrist. Made from the high grade Supra 316L/4435 stainless steel in Finland by the renown steel giant, Outokumpu, the steel is forged in Helsinki and is impregnated with anti-corrosive nickel mined from the Finnish ground.

The collection is not new, but now Stepan inscribes his love for stone dials onto this novelty. Three new models are released, one with an aventurine dial, another with lapis lazuli, and the third in malachite. All with patterns and inclusions which make each dial unique.

We are particularly attracted to the Malachite dial. An attraction which is also derived from our recent encounter with Piaget’s Black Tie Vintate Malachite. The vintage piece, no doubt also inspired Stepan when he was restoring watches at Piaget.
Release details
More than 30 years ago, while working at Piaget, Stepan restored watches with stone dials – an experience that quietly stayed with him. Now, decades later, that memory surfaces in the Vetehinen diving watches, where stone once again meets craft.
Vetehinen Aventurine
Aventurine glass – born not in the earth, but in fire – is a man-made material known for its deep color and mesmerizing sparkle, created by suspending copper or metallic particles within molten glass. First discovered in 17th-century Venice, it shimmers like a starry sky frozen in time. Now, this radiant material finds new life in a S.U.F Helsinki timepiece, crafted by master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, who first explored the world of stone and glass dials at Piaget in the early ’90s.

Vetehinen Lapis lazuli
Lapis lazuli, prized since ancient Egypt, was the stone of kings, gods, and the world’s first ultramarine pigment. Now it appears for the first time in a S.U.F Helsinki timepiece, forged by master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, who first worked with stone dials at Piaget in the early ’90s.

Vetehinen Malachite
Malachite, with its swirling green depths and ancient aura of protection and prosperity, feels like a fragment of the earth’s soul. For the first time, this mystical stone graces a S.U.F Helsinki timepiece – crafted by master watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, whose journey with stone dials began in the early ’90s at Piaget.
