The Citizen Series 8 NB6080-51W retails at USD 1,300 with tax.

As the horological world is turning towards smaller dimension on the watch case, Japanese watch giant Citizen is not an exception. Introducing the latest lineup of Citizen Series 8 which features a smaller and thinner case profile as compared to the existing lineup making the wildly successful Series 8 even more accessible to individuals with smaller wrist.

The Case

The true highlight of the latest line-up is the case. Measuring 39.3mm in diameter and just 10.4mm in thickness, the new model wears noticeably better than most existing Series 8 references, particularly for those with smaller wrists. In these revised proportions, the watch appears more balanced and refined, shedding the “dish-on-the-wrist” aesthetic of its larger counterparts.

These new dimensions broaden the watch’s appeal beyond traditional enthusiasts to include the fairer sex as well. During our week-long trial, we observed considerable interest from female wearers, many of whom were drawn to the watch specifically because of its more wearable and versatile sizing.

The Dial

Released just in time for the Lunar New Year, the dial features a stylised interpretation of Tokyo’s night-time skyline, rendered in a chequered pattern, a much-loved Japanese motif associated with prosperity and success.

What truly drew us in, however, is the beautiful pistachio-green hue of the dial, one of the most sought-after colours in recent years, with watch maisons from Switzerland to Japan embracing this trend. In this instance, the execution is particularly commendable: the contrast between the dial and hands is expertly balanced, resulting in excellent legibility and visual harmony.

The Movement

Powering the Citizen Series 8 NB6080-51W is the familiar Cal. 9051 automatic workhorse movement. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 bph, delivers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours, and offers an accuracy rating of –10 to +20 seconds per day.

Viewed through the display case back, the movement is adorned with attractive Tokyo stripes, a welcome touch at this price point. One of the key distinctions between the Cal. 9051 and the more common Cal. 9015 lies in its enhanced anti-magnetic properties. According to our research, the Cal. 9051 can withstand magnetic fields of up to 16,000 A/m, or 200 gauss, giving it the resilience required to endure the rigours of daily wear.

The Bracelet

The bracelet on the new Series 8 NB6080-51W features a three-link design, comprising an H-shaped link flanked by a centre link. The upper surfaces are finished with linear brushing, while the chamfers and inner sides are rendered in bright polish.

The deployant clasp adopts a bi-folding construction that is both secure and convenient for daily wear. However, during our week-long test period, we noticed that scratches accumulated on the clasp rather quickly. This is not necessarily a drawback; rather, it reflects a watch that is genuinely worn and enjoyed, accumulating the marks of everyday adventures.

Concluding Thoughts

The Citizen Series 8 NB6080-51W is an excellent proposition for daily wear. Unsurprisingly, it stands as a serious contender to the Tissot PRX 35mm Powermatic 80 and the Mido Multifort 8 One Crown, giving both Swiss offerings a genuine run for their money. That said, we cannot help but wonder… do the Mido and the Citizen look just a little too similar?
