G-SHOCK is a brand that celebrates the different cultures, and that is seen in its collaborations with the movers and shakers in industries such as music, fashion, sports, and the arts.

This year, to commemorate Singapore’s 54th year of independence, the Japanese watch manufacturer had decided to work with SKL0 to launch a timepiece to mark this special occasion.

SKL0, who is also known as Sam Lo (or rather, more famously as the friendly neighbourhood “Sticker Lady”), is a Singaporean-based visual artist who focuses her creations based on social commentaries from her daily observations and research into the socio-political climate. One of her most interesting creation happened in November 2016, where she and her team used chalk paint to paint the words” My Grandfather Road” along the 170 meters stretch of Circular Road. Besides that, she is also known for her wildly popular Block Party and Playcourt installations as well.

The timepiece is based on the signature GX-56BB model, a mainstay in the Casio G-SHOCK collection. The watch, which is decked out in black, is fitted with a custom designed rubber strap that is coloured vibrantly. The vivid colours are inspired by Singapore’s melting pot of culture, which includes the country’s merits of security, heritage, culture, and economic strength. According to SKL0, the strap features cultural elements that are familiar to many Singaporeans – which includes lightning bolts, camera lenses, to dollar coins. These follows SKL0’s art philosophy, but more importantly it also highlights the resilience and uniqueness of the Singaporean culture.

Priced at S$299, the G-SHOCK x SKL0 timepiece is limited to a run of 300 pieces. In addition, the watch will come in a special package that is in line with the classic Singapore National Day Parade (NDP) theme song “We Are Singapore”. Finally, the watch can be purchased now at all G-SHOCK boutiques (except IMM).
