Raymond Weil begins its half year countdown to the brand’s 50th anniversary with a new collection which they call the Toccata Heritage.

Commentary
I don’t know about you, but this is a brand which I had some rather fond memories when I was growing up. They had a commercial at the start of the evening news…Time by Raymond Weil. But over the years, as I started collecting, they have moved to the periphery of my vision. Probably because the designs are dressy, and they tend to focus on the lower end of the market. They were somehow bundled into the same bucket as Tissot. But in WWG this year, they seem to have a revival. Still strongly family owned and managed, the clean design seem to be making a comeback. We are sincerely looking forward to what they will unveil for their 50th in 2026.
This release is interesting, to say the least. The design of the case and dial is not only mildly reminiscent, but perhaps a doppelgänger for the Patek Philippe Ellipse Ref. 3548 in 1968. The design was often mistakenly attributed to Gerald Genta, but Genta himself clarified that the design is the work of Jean-Daniel Rubeli. Needless to say, the design is sublime. We loved the execution and have waxed lyrical about the Ellipse in 2018, and again with the magnificent bracelet form this year.
The shape is of great interest. A simple ellipse, perfectly proportioned. It is elegant, sophisticated and stands out in the crowd of round watches. For this Toccata Heritage release, Raymond Weil releases the collection in two sizes, both in stainless steel. A larger Ref. 2280 33x38mm watch in 4 dial/case/strap variants with a form shaped mechanical movement. Raymond Weil calls the movement the cal RW4100, but this is a movement which is derived from the Sellita SW210-1, with the base plate modified into an oval shape to more appropriately fit the ellipse case of the Toccata. The range offers to fit a variety of tastes, with one model in an almost monotone rose gold (PVD rose gold coating) with a copper sunray dial, while the two others are in a natural stainless steel case with either a silver or blue dial. The blue dial variant is also available with a three link steel bracelet.
And a smaller Ref. 5280, intended for the ladies in 31x36mm which is equipped with a quartz movement. The 5280 comes not only in various case colours, but also with some models set with diamonds. A total of 5 models are offered at launch, one in rose gold PVD for case and bracelet with a diamond set bezel, and another in yellow gold PVD case with calf leather strap in green. Also in natural stainless steel with either a burgundy dial or blue dial with diamond set bezel with bracelet, or a blue dial in calf strap.
This is a rather extensive two reference collection. Each reference with its own sub-variants. And offers a good selection at the entry level, as the mechanical models are priced from CHF 1.4k and the quartz models are below CHF 1k.
