This is not the smallest Panerai yet, but at 40mm, it is one of the smaller models in their catalog. The honour of the smallest Panerai goes to the Luminox Due, which have case sizes in 38mm and 42mm. Panerai considers the Luminor Due to be part of separate line to the Luminor Marina line, so this new 40mm Luminor Marina Quaranta is the smallest watch in the Marina collection, and will replace the current 42mm models. The Due however, heralded the age of the smaller Panerais, which were well known for large, chunky watches. The new Quaranta design retains the iconic cushion shaped case and the signature patented Panerai crown guard with its peculiar locking lever.

Three dial options are available on the launch models – a white dial, a black dial and a blue dial.

The proportions look exactly correct on the new Quaranta, and without putting it side by side to the standard 44mm Marina, it looks exactly the same. Here is a composite photograph we made with the two to scale. We used this special release PAM 1971 as a comparison example because we have the photograph readily available in the same scale as the new Quaranta.

Notes on the PAM 1971 shown on the left: A 200 watch limited edition made in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the United Arab Emirates. The reference number is a nod to the year the country was established. The watch’s design codes borrow from the colours of the UAE flag – a green GMT hand and rubberized crown, a red running seconds hand, and a black sun-burst dial. In addition, the engraving on the caseback reads “Year of the Fiftieth” in English and Arabic. The prototype was auctioned in a Christie’s Online auction on October 13-27, 2021.

On the Left the PAM 1971 in its 44mm standard case size and on the right, the new 1270. The PAM 1971 is a special piece released un 2021 is used as an example for the 44mm case size, and also a place for us to talk about this watch.

The Panerai Caliber P.900 in the Quaranta is already a tested movement which is used a variety of Panerai watches, including the Due. The P.900 is based on the OP XXXIV, itself a variant of the ValFleurier ebauche manufactured by a company owned by Richemont, Panerai’s parent.

Even the most acclaimed watches evolve, responding to the shifting tides of technology and style. Without tampering with the features that identify the classic Luminor Marina—a cushion-shaped case with a brushed finish, solid lugs and polished bezel—its latest evolution represents a transformation that will swell the ranks of its devotees. The introduction of Luminor Marina Quaranta, a 40mm execution of the immediately identifiable Panerai model, revives a case size that had been a part of the model’s history, teamed with novel functions that increase its versatility.

As a result, Luminor Marina Quaranta will substitute 42mm references, becoming the smallest Luminor Marina in production. It is a watch that achieves equilibrium between an elegant presence and a casual, urbane attitude and deepens the reach of Luminor Marina to a cosmopolitan audience, confident and independent.

The Luminor Marina Quaranta is available with a stainless-steel case and three different dial executions possessing strong aesthetic identities, displaying a seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock and the date at 3 o’clock. Each watch is accompanied by an alligator leather strap and a calf leather strap chosen to coordinate with their dial: a matte white dial with straps in black alligator and deep brown calf (PAM01271), a matte black dial paired with black alligator and black calf straps (PAM01272) and a sun-brushed blue dial with a navy-blue alligator strap and second in tobacco calf (PAM01270). In each instance, straps and buckles incorporate the Quick Release System, a feature that allows both elements to be changed easily and immediately without the use of tools. With a personally curated collection of straps, it is simple to transform the look of the Luminor Marina Quaranta to complement any setting, occasion or impulse.

And soon the opportunities to update the appearance of the Luminor Marina Quaranta will multiply once again. Flexible, lightweight rubber bracelets featuring the Quick Release system will be available in the next months for a full spectrum of color with a sporty spin.

With the P.900 calibre, the timelessness of the Luminor Marina Quaranta model is matched by an equally enduring movement. The thin (4.2mm) automatic winding caliber with a three-day power reserve concealed within the closed caseback, which is water-resistant to 10 bar (about 100 meters deep).
