The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01759 retails at EUR 9,900 / SGD 13,800.

Commentary

The PAM01759 is a vintage-inspired creation that pays tribute to Panerai’s earliest role as a supplier of precision instruments to the Italian Navy. Its robust 44mm stainless steel case, domed sapphire crystal, and full Arabic numeral dial coated with green Super-LumiNova® recall the utilitarian demands of military divers, while the small-seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock reinforces its instrumental character. That said, the different font sizes strike an edgy visual contrast to the more common stick markers.

From a technical perspective, the watch is powered by the automatic P.9010 calibre, offering a three-day power reserve and quick hour-hand adjustment for seamless time zone changes. With water resistance up to 30 bar (~300 meters), a closed engraved caseback, and straps in both vintage calf leather and practical black rubber, the PAM01759 is a modern tool watch with a classic design.

Panerai introduces the Luminor Marina PAM01759, a vintage-inspired tribute to its instrumental origins

Panerai unveils the Luminor Marina PAM01759, a limited edition of 1000 pieces that pays tribute to the Maison’s historic connection to the sea and its earliest instruments developed in its birth city of Florence. A nod to Panerai’s extensive archives, this watch draws directly from the emblematic codes that shaped Panerai’s identity during its formative years as a supplier to the Italian Navy.

“The Luminor Marina PAM01759 is more than just a watch; it is a testament to our dedication to merging historical inspiration with modern innovation. By reinterpreting key features from Panerai’s rich past into our bestselling Luminor Marina portfolio, we’ve created a design with an unmistakable vintage allure, strengthening the connection to our rich heritage, to which we remain ever faithful,” says Alessandro Ficarelli, Chief Marketing and Product Officer of Panerai.

Rooted in vintage aesthetics yet manufactured for today’s standards, the Luminor Marina PAM01759 features a robust 44mm stainless steel case fitted with a domed sapphire crystal—a subtle but impactful reference to early Panerai designs. The domed crystal enhances legibility and evokes the silhouette of early underwater instruments, magnifying the distinctive all-numeral dial. This dial layout, used historically in Panerai’s bestsellers and archival pieces, is rendered here with green Super-LumiNova®, recalling the legibility requirements of military divers in low-light conditions. The small-seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, a key instrument for divers to monitor the watch’s functionality during underwater operations, further emphasizes its connection to Panerai’s military roots.

The timepiece is powered by the P.9010 calibre, an automatic movement with a three-day power reserve driven by two spring barrels wound by an oscillating weight that operates in both directions. The P.9010 allows for quick adjustment of the hour hand without affecting the minute hand, enabling easy time zone changes. In keeping with the vintage ethos of the piece, the date function has been omitted, resulting in a purer, cleaner dial layout—echoing timepieces from the brand’s early naval commissions.

Created to withstand the elements, the timepiece offers water resistance up to 30 bar (~300 meters), a benchmark well beyond similar pieces on the market. As with all Panerai timepieces, this watch is tested to +25% of its stated standard. The caseback is closed and engraved with the words “Limited Edition” and its numbered series. Equipped with a dark brown vintage calf leather strap and a trapezoidal pin buckle, the PAM01759 reinforces its throwback character. A black rubber strap is also included, offering practical versatility without compromising the aesthetic direction of the watch. The Luminor Marina PAM01759 will be available in Panerai boutiques starting from December 2025 and is presented in a special wooden box, a signature element of Panerai’s limited-edition releases.

The only avenue left for Panerai is for it going back to its roots, but it may be a case of too little, too late. They’ve pretty much sabotaged their reputation along with their watch offerings over time. And there’s no telling if and how they move forward from here. This should be a case of moving forward by going backwards, so to speak, but I’m not sure they get it; in addition to these knuckleheads pricing themselves further out of reality. They’ve shown that if there’s a way to mess up a good thing, they’ll find the way to do so!
