Commentary

We covered the release of the LM Sequential EVO in 2022. In 2024, the Sequential was released in the classic Legacy Machine case with one additional technical feature – a flyback function on both chronographs. We covered a detailed technical discussion of the LM Sequential Flyback. This movement is now applied to this novelty, bringing the flyback feature back to its origins to the LM Sequential EVO design language. The design and mechanics of the LM Sequential was and still remains groundbreaking in mechanical chronographs. And still fascinates.

This new release is the same watch as the LM Sequential Flyback (2024), but with a different dial plate. The launch non flyback EVO (2022) had a zircronium case with either an atomic orange dial plate (orange CVD) and with coal black dial plate (black PVD), and the LM Sequential Flyback (2024) had a platinum case with a sky blue dial plate. This new LM Sequential Flyback EVO is now available in a grade 5 titanium case with an aquamarine dial plate.

The rest of the watch is remains unchanged. The physical specifications like the diameter (44mm x 18mm), the water resistance rating (8 atm), case features like the screw down crown and FlexRing absorber remains the same. The only other change is the Hour Minute dial, which is shown as a small disc at 6 o’clock is now tilted towards the wearer. It was previously parallel to the dial plate.

Pricing wise, the watch is pitched at the very top level, but pricing has remained at an even keel for this latest release at CHF 168k for a titanium case. The LM Sequential EVO in the zirchronium case was pitched at CHF 160k and the LM Sequential Flyback in a platinum case retailed at CHF 188k.

Release details

When MB&F unveiled the LM Sequential EVO in 2022, it rewrote the rules of mechanical chronographs. The 585-component calibre created with independent watchmaker Stephen McDonnell was in fact a double chronograph, featuring the groundbreaking ‘Twinverter’ binary switch, offering an unprecedented combination of timing modes: independent, split-second, lap timer and cumulative timing, all united in a single movement. The hand-finished dual column-wheel chronograph system also featured patented internally-jewelled vertical clutch shafts, outperforming conventional chronographs on energy efficiency and precision. For all those reasons, the LM Sequential EVO received the ultimate prize: the GPHG Aiguille d’Or for Best Watch of the Year.

But that wasn’t quite enough for Stephen McDonnell. After two further years of development – and a few extra components, bringing the calibre total to 621 – he raised the bar even further: flyback functionality on both chronographs. First applied to two classic editions, the Flyback now brings an important upgrade to the EVO collection.

The new LM Sequential Flyback EVO combines flyback functionality with the full EVO repertoire designed for an active lifestyle: 80 metres of water resistance, integrated rubber strap, screw-down crown, and the FlexRing shock absorber. And there’s an additional feature: the signature MB&F tilted time dial, which was not included in the original EVO editions but did appear on the classic LM Sequential Flybacks for improved legibility, now makes its debut in the LM Sequential Flyback EVO.
