New: Louis Moinet Savanna Tourbillon – the real jigsaw watches

The Louis Moinet Savanna Tourbillon are released as three piece uniques. Retail price is CHF 140,000 excluding VAT for each of the three watches.

Commentary

Interestingly, Louis Moinet releases a Métiers d’Art collection featuring an acrylic micro-painting which displayed as a finished jigsaw puzzle. The watch dial is designed with the mysterious look, that is, without indices. And at 6 o’clock on the dial, an aperture shows a flying tourbillon. Three variants are available in the launch collection viz a viz an African elephant, a leopard and a lion.

Each of the dials is made up of 81 individual pieces. The pieces are hand painted as a complete puzzle, but then completely disassembled to paint the edge of each individual piece. The pieces are then reassembled to form the puzzle dial.

Unlike the other big name watch which feature a jigsaw puzzle motif on the dial this year, the new Louis Moinet features a real jigsaw puzzle which is hand painted by an artisan, cut into interlocking plates, and hand assembled.

The obvious comparison is to the new Rolex Day-Date 36 with a cloisonné style enamel in turquoise blue, red, fuchsia, orange, green and yellow pieces. The dial is one level and a single piece. The watch does come with the 10 of the hour markers in baguette-cut sapphires in six different hues set according to the main colour of the dial, which is turquoise blue on the 18 ct yellow gold and 18 ct white gold versions, and orange on the watch in 18 ct Everose gold. The eccentric touches for the day of the week and date, coupled with this whimsical and colourful jigsaw dial does show Rolex coming down from its traditional high horse and be a bit more fun. The regular Day-Date 36 in gold retails for SGD 53k, and to date, we have not been given a retail price for the new jigsaw Day-Date 36 watches.

The case of the Louis Moinet Savanna Tourbillon is in 5N 18k rose gold which is polished and satinated with a case diameter of 40.7mm. And at CHF 140k, it strikes us as not out of character for a watch with superior craftsmanship in the miniature paintings and the tourbillon to boot.

Release details

Inspiring savanna
The SAVANNA TOURBILLON’s dial is designed as a canvas that offers space where emblematic animals of the savanna can be portrayed as a central theme. The micro-painted elephant on the dial is done with precise strokes, capturing the essence of this magnificent creature with its imposing silhouette. The intricate details of its rough skin and the sheer power emanating from the dial invite us to marvel at the splendour of the savannah, where the royal elephant reigns supreme as a symbol of strength and grace.

HAUTE HORLOGERIE | The flying tourbillon

The flying tourbillon of the SAVANNA TOURBILLON is in an off-centre cage at 6 o’clock, where it works its magic making corrections for gravity and fascinating the viewer. It is driven by a hand-wound mechanism equipped with twin barrels installed “volte-face,” or head to tail, allowing them to release their energy simultaneously and delivering 96 hours of power reserve.

A pink-gold case as the crowning glory

This outstanding work of art is delicately framed by an 18-carat 5N pink-gold, 40-millimetre case with well-defined, flowing curves. The domed sapphire crystal, a technically challenging element to manufacture, reveals the captivating details of the puzzle and the tourbillon. The open-worked horns perfectly underscore the integration of the bracelet.
