New: Linde Werdelin Oktopus Moon in bronze and gold dial

Marking the beginning of Autumn and reflective of the colours of a Harvest Moon, Linde Werdelin presents the Oktopus Moon with bronze and gold dial.

Commentary

The Oktopus is Linde Werdelin’s diving watch, with a depth rating of 300m. The construction of the new Oktopus Moon is on the same case as the regular Oktopus which features many iterations of the basic large date which Linde Werdelin calls the Double Date model. We featured the Oktopus Blue Sea which is a collaboration with Black Badger to display a full dial in high lume.

This new model – the Oktopus Moon is a development over their Oktopus Moon line, joining 3 other existing models using the same module – Oktopus Moonlight (ALW proprietary alloy case), Oktopus Crazy Universe (Grade 5 Ti case) and Oktopus BluMoon (Grade 5 Ti case). The only differences between the models are the dial, with the novelty sporting a Bronze Gold dial and the Grade 2 Ti case with 18k RG crown. Interestingly, this model is just released, and is the base model. The naming convention is just Oktopus Moon and it is currently the least expensive model in the lineup. The Crazy Universe is the most expensive, presumably due to the additional handwork on the case.

The movement is an unspecified automatic with an added moon phase module. The movement has existed in Linde Werdelin watches since 2010, and was originally a Sven Andersen moon module over a F. Piguet base movement. Our best guess of the current movement is that the Sven Andersen module is retained, but the base is probably now an ETA or Sellita. This is because F. Piguet movements, now known as Manufacture Blancpain, are not available outside the Swatch Group.

The Linde Werdelin Oktopus aesthetics remain as strong as ever. And the “indestructible” feel is still ever present, which is a good thing, as this is a dive watch, and your life may depend on it. The moonphase display is perhaps a bit whimsical. We can see some applications where the moonphase is an important factor in diving. Perhaps in planning a dive, but cannot see that this is a useful feature during the actual dive. Nevertheless, it looks absolutely beautiful on the watch, and no doubt in the Oktopus Moon’s most frequent habitat where the owner is desk diving, it will be a nice talking point feature.

The Linde Werdelin Oktopus Moon is a limited edition of 59 pieces. Retail price is SGD 22,800 inclusive of GST / GBP 13,800 inclusive of UK VAT.

The harvest (orange) moon is considered to hold a special magic, as it rises around the same time as the sun sets and lights up the night skies well into the morning hours, affecting planting and growing, people’s emotions, and the ocean tides.

In a seasonal interpretation of the highly technical Oktopus family, made for divers and created for the Danish navy special forces, this piece features a five-layer skeletonised dial in bronze and gold, complemented by rose gold satin finish hands.

Our original in-house complication, the Moonphase developed over a decade ago, is a striking testament to the brand’s continued focus on diving and skiing, or the sea and the mountains. At night, the photorealistic moons enable the diver to track the development of the moon phases and with that the impact on tides and ambient light and thereby plan the optimal time for night dives.

In darkness the large numerals in white glow cool grey-blue luminova, as do the rose gold satin finish hands, for visibility with the setting sun and rising moon.

The Oktopus Moon is complemented by an interchangeable Earth Brown rubber strap with Ardillion Buckle.
