Commentary
At first reading of Press Release, the Anyday seems to display the trivial. It shows, at a glance, the day of the week for the entire current month plus a preview of the first 4 days of the next month. It also displays the current date. This idea is not novel, after all, any print or digital calendar is able to show this. And indeed watches which display the day and date are not uncommon. But we are not sure if there is ever one which shows the entire month at a single glance. The additional genius is to show this on a dial which is not cluttered, but which is clean and legible. Now this is interesting and not trivial!
The main dial is a medallion in the center with a guilloché of the Krayon signature “Y” logo. On this, the hour marker appliqués are displayed. A ring around this central dial carries the date as well as the day of the week for the entire 31 days of the current plus the first 4 days of the following month. The aesthetic of the dial is very pleasant, with a combination of dark and light blue with the silver hue of the hands and appliques, and also the chapter ring holding the center disk.
The hands are also very elegant and finished in a high polish matching the hour markers. The central disc carries no other nomenclature except for the brand name “KRAYON”, And knowing Rémi Maillat, we are sure that he will offer the colours as well as which days represent the weekend (for the Arabic weekend is Friday to Saturday) to be customised.
But the ring around this central dial is where the interesting part happens. What appears as one ring is actually two rings, stacked one on the other. The upper part of the ring has numerals depicting the date as cutouts in Arabic numerals. Below this upper ring is another ring, with sectors marked in dark blue and light blue. The dark blue sectors will indicate the weekdays are longer than the light blue sectors which will show the weekend. When stacked below the upper ring, the combination displays the weekdays with a dark blue numeral, and the weekend in a light blue numeral. Whie the upper ring is stationary, the lower ring moves instantaneously at midnight every day, advancing one day. This is done by a cam which accumulates energy through out the day and releases at midnight. Another cam does the same for the date display which is shown as a crescent around the current date, and also moves it once a day keeping tandem with the day of the week. The disks are programmed to move from one day to the next for 31 days, and will require an adjustment on months with 30 days and for February. All corrections are done via the crown, leaving the case sides clean and uncluttered. This crown only adjustment is also more convenient and intuitive to use.
The case is a svelte looking construction in white gold and measures a very ‘right sized” 39mm. The case is a standard round case with stepped and a bombé bezel and soldered lugs. Quite elegant.
As with the other Krayon watches, the movement design is immaculate with top level finishing applied. The movement, the Caliber C032 is designed by Rémi and features all the haute horlogerie elements needed for a watch at this level.
The visual impact of of examining the case back is spectacular, with the curved Côtes de Genéve, sharp angles, the polished countersinks for the jewels and the superb black polished click spring are testament to the high level of finissage applied to the movement.
