Commentary
Kerbedanz has mostly stayed out of the limelight since we first encountered the maison back in 2017, where we were amazed with the Maximus. We covered it in a detailed review, and the Maximus was touted as the largest tourbillon in the world, with a flying central tourbillon measuring 27mm. Curiously, the press material for this novelty does not specify the size of the tourbillon. Strange because, obviously this is their unique selling proposition. Why not tout it, especially when they built the branding with this claim.

Overall, the press release text is quite sparse, with a very short description mainly focusing on the ceramic case. But the photographs released are numerous and high quality. With this new release, they have at least 4 different calibers in the current catalog- the KRB08, the original movement with a 6 minute tourbillon, the KRB08-2 with a tourbillon doing a revolution every 2 minutes. Both these tourbillons are hand wound. (They also have a KRB14, which is an automatic monopusher chronograph with no tourbillon.)

This novelty’s KRB-13 now features a one minute tourbillon, and automatic winding with a central large rotor. All their watches feature with giant balances, and we think this is perhaps their calling card. Three huge balance wheels now, within the giant cage (of course!) a flying tourbillon, and one which is not a tourbillon, but also a giant balance, which is inverted. Interesting lineup. Kerbedanz has been known to work with Concepto and La Fabrique du Temps in the past for the development of their movements, and thus, the providence of this new KRB-13 is unclear.

But otherwise, the watch looks like it could come from Urwerk UR-100/UR110 vibes. Of course the Urwerks feature their rotating satellite display, while on the Kerbedanz, it showcases the huge flying tourbillon with its admittedly very impressive curved (in three dimensions) cage. The hours and minute hands emerge as little arrows from the outer periphery of the tourbillon.

An interesting note is the at the case is rather small for such an eye catching watch, the specifications say it only measures 39mm, though we are not sure how this measurement is made as the case is elongated along the 12/6 axis. In contrast, the Maximus we reviewed is in a massive 49mm round case. And the other two watches in the current catalog, the Maximus GR8 and Maxispor GR8 (chronograph, no tourbillon) measure a generous 57mm x 46mm.

The other thought which comes to mind is if white ceramic cases are the new trend this year. We just saw the release of the final chapter in the Greubel Forsey S2 Convexe Balancier…which come to think of it, also bears some light resemblance to this Maxima GR8.

Pricing is also rather interesting. The asking price of CHF 130k may be perceived as rather reasonable for such a watch in today’s market. Or it may not. We will decide when we have experienced the watch first hand.

Also interesting is that our old friend Vahé Vartzbed is now CEO of Kerbedanz. He was formerly from Greubel Forsey and HYT. We will try and catch him in Geneva and clarify the missing information.
Release information
The Maison Kerbedanz continues its pursuit of horological excellence with the unveiling of two new exceptional timepieces from the Maxima GR8 collection. Combining avant-garde design with traditional Swiss craftsmanship, these creations embody the Maison’s dedication to mechanical artistry and innovation. At the heart of each piece beats a mesmerizing central flying tourbillon, a symbol of precision and perpetual motion.

A Dialogue of Contrasts: Black & White Ceramic Editions
In continuity with the previous versions crafted in monocrystalline sapphire, Kerbedanz introduces two striking interpretations of the Maxima GR8: a Black Ceramic Edition and a White Ceramic Edition. These timepieces draw inspiration from the timeless symbolism of Yin and Yang, opposing forces that exist in harmony. The deep, matte black ceramic evokes strength, mystery, and infinity, while the luminous white ceramic expresses purity, clarity, and light. Together, they create a powerful visual and philosophical contrast, revealing the hypnotic one-minute central tourbillon at their core.

“With these two new Maxima GR8 39mm editions, we wanted to express balance through contrast, shadow and light, strength and elegance. The central tourbillon becomes the living symbol of this harmony, constantly in motion, uniting both worlds.”
Vahé Vartzbed, CEO of Kerbedanz.
Advanced Ceramic Craftsmanship
Both editions feature high-performance ceramic cases, renowned for their exceptional hardness, scratch resistance, and lightweight comfort. The black ceramic version offers a bold, contemporary aesthetic with a stealth-like finish, while the white ceramic edition stands out with its refined, modern elegance. Each case is meticulously finished to enhance the architectural design of the Maxima GR8.
