Commentary

We reviewed the 2019 release, then called the Bridges Cosmos, and were quite impressed with the virtuosity of the complication and technical capability exhibited by GP. And after a slumber since, GP has return to its complication roots with this new version of Cosmos. The same three complications remain – viz the tourbillon with its Neo Bridge, the terrestial globe at 3 o’clock indicating the day/night and the celestial globe at 9 o’clock showing the constellation of zodiacs.

What is new is the finishings. This new edition is a piece unique in a titanium case. The movement remains unchanged as the GP09320.

Release information

First released in 2019, the Cosmos wonderfully demonstrates Girard-Perregaux’s horological prowess. Equipped with three exceptional complications, the model encompasses technical virtuosity, uncompromising finishing and artisanal craftsmanship. Girard-Perregaux had chosen to create three versions of this model featuring aventurine, obsidian and onyx, but also a combination of spectrolite and aventurine. Later, Girard-Perregaux presented the Cosmos Infinity, limited to eight pieces and showcasing black onyx. Today, Girard-Perregaux unveils a new unique piece that once again reflects its commitment to refinement.

THREE CAPTIVATING COMPLICATIONS

The Cosmos featuring a titanium case is equipped with three complications, including a tourbillon, a complication designed to counter the adverse influence of gravity on the regulating organ. Presented at the base of the dial, the tourbillon features a lyre-shaped cage. This is held in position by Girard-Perregaux’s signature aerial Neo Bridge, a contemporary interpretation of Constant-Girard’s famous ‘arrow-shaped’ bridge of the 19th century, here in titanium.

Complementing the tourbillon, the watch is equipped with two additional complications, a terrestrial globe and a celestial globe. The terrestrial globe positioned at 3 o’clock offers a day/night indication, with daytime visible on the dial side and night-time on the case-back side. Completing a full rotation in 24 hours, the globe is encircled by an hour ring inspired by Saturn’s rings. This fixed hour ring provides a glimpse of the time. Positioned opposite, at 9 o’clock, the celestial globe displays the constellations of the Zodiac and completes a rotation in 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds—the duration of a sidereal day, corresponding to a 360° rotation of the Earth on its axis.

In keeping with its cosmic inspiration, the Cosmos presents a dial made of Tahitian mother-of-pearl topped by blue aventurine. The aventurine layer has been reduced in thickness to allow its translucency to reveal the iridescent reflections of the mother-of-pearl below. The contrast of deep iridescent hues and the shimmering particles of blue aventurine produces captivating plays of light and a seamless harmony with the blue globes.

Positioned toward the top of the dial, the off-centered black time counter displays the time across a black sandblasted core surrounded by a sunray-finished outer ring. The polished white-gold hour markers, paired with white-gold hands treated with luminescent material and a minute track marked by twelve luminescent blocks, guarantee clear readability in the dark. The globes are crafted from titanium, each enhanced with a laser-oxidized finish that lends a rich, textured surface. They are then coated with luminescent material, allowing them to glow brilliantly in the dark…

Although the different rotation speeds of the two globes are barely noticeable to the naked eye, Girard-Perregaux has ensured they move with absolute precision. And unlike in the real world, the constellations displayed on the dial side remain perfectly visible, unaffected by light pollution or low light.

A SENSE OF COHESION

In keeping with the Bridges collection’s design language, visual symmetry is pushed to its limits. The dial assigns each of the four cardinal points to a dedicated function or complication, while the case back preserves a perfect left–right balance, further emphasized by the absence of a crown.

Instead of a conventional crown, the watch uses four rotating bows — called “bélières” — located on the back for winding and setting. Three symbols identify each function: an hourglass for the time, an Earth for the terrestrial globe, and stars with a moon for the celestial globe. Each one is treated with luminescent material to ensure easy use in the dark.

The semi-circular sapphire case back has been shaped to seamlessly accommodate the winding bow. In contrast to this flat sapphire crystal, the front of the watch is endowed with a sapphire “box” crystal that offers an expansive view of the movement, amplifying its depth and three-dimensional presence. Crafting this domed crystal requires approximately 4.5 times more material than a conventional flat sapphire case back.

TRUE TO THE MANUFACTURE’S PHILOSOPHY

Since its founding in 1791, Girard-Perregaux has built its reputation on creating refined expressions of high watchmaking. Throughout its history, the Maison has consistently combined strong chronometric performance, distinctive design and skilled craftsmanship. The Cosmos upholds this reputation.

The Cosmos is equipped with the Calibre GP09320, a hand-wound movement conceived, developed and manufactured in-house, and enriched with high-end finishing. The titanium Neo Bridge is sandblasted and finished with hand-beveling, while the mainplate showcases circular graining, sandblasting, and beveling.

WATCHMAKING EXPERTISE AND CRAFTMANSHIP

The Cosmos brings together design, craftsmanship, and watchmaking expertise. This model incorporates refined materials, globes with luminescent material and a high quotient of watchmaking know-how.
