Commentary

After 79 years since its founding in Shibuya, Tokyo on April 1946, Casio releases its first mechanical watch. Till now, all watches released by Casio have been using quart movements. And this release is the first with an automatic winding movement.

The case and design looks very interesting, if quite similar to classical offerings from its Japanese rivals, viz Seiko and Citizen. The same sober tonneau shaped watch with integrated bracelet. The play here is with the dial colour options.

The first three versions in 39m steel case and bracelets are available in a charcoal grey, blue, green or silver. The coloured dials are electro-formed to make a similar pattern. The dial is beautifully manufactured, and is very nicely finished in silver polished indices and hands. A fourth version, the EFK-100CD has a charcoal coloured dial is made from a forged carbon and resin material. Case and bracelet finishing seems to be very well done, with the usual Japanese style juxtaposition of zaratsu polished surfaces next to brushed ones.

A special version, known as the EFK-100XPB version is also available, and this model comes with a forged carbon and resin case, measuring in at a slightly larger 40mm in nominal diameter. As the case is forged carbon, it shows its own unique striations and patterns unique to each case. The dial is also made from carbon resin dial which is the same as that offered in the EFK-100CD. Polished indices and hands are in anodised black to complete the picture. The XPB comes with a black coated steel bezel and crown with a rubber strap.

Curiously, the movement is sourced from Seiko in the form of the workhorse TMI (Seiko) NH35. We find this slightly disappointing that Casio chose not to develop their own movement, taking the unique proposition out of the equation. But then, at this price point, we can hardly complain. These are Swatch like prices and Casio is offering a steel case with bracelet or a full carbon case for the same as what the Sistem 51 is retailing at. But still, would have been nicer with a Casio in-house movement. One which we are certain a company with the depth and breath of know-how would be capable off.

We have requested for review loaners to test the watches, and see how they perform in real world conditions as well as for photography to do a full hands on review. Coming soon.

Release details

CASIO Computer Co., Ltd. announced the release of the latest addition to the EDIFICE line of timepieces based on the brand concept of “Speed & Intelligence”. The new EFK-100 series mechanical watches that, for the first time in the EDIFICE line, incorporate forged carbon, a material renowned for its strength and lightweight properties.

EDIFICE, a brand inspired by the world of motorsports, keeps delivering wonder and joy to customers through its bold designs and distinctive style, and by incorporating carbon fibre and other materials prevalent in automotive culture.

The new EFK-100XPB mechanical timepiece debuts the use of forged carbon on both its case and dial, while the EFK-100CD incorporates this high-performance material on its dial. Forged carbon is a lightweight and high-strength material commonly used in high-end sports cars and custom automotive parts. Created by blending carbon fibre with resin, the result is a distinctive marbled texture with unique, random patterns that make each watch one of a kind. The minimalist design, featuring only three hands and a date display, draws attention to the depth and pattern of the forged carbon dial.

Another first for CASIO, the EFK-100 series introduces a mechanical movement to the EDIFICE line, to reflect the shared dynamism and joy of driving and mechanical timekeeping. The see-through case back reveals the movement in motion, where refined mechanical beauty echoes the aesthetics of car engines and suspension systems. The movement delivers a power reserve of approximately 40 hours when fully wound.

In addition to the EFK-100XPB and EFK-100CD, CASIO also unveils three new models under the EFK-100D series. These mechanical watches replicate the look of forged carbon through an electroforming process, delivering the same visual impact with a different material approach.

    • Indeed the specification is not great, but it is kinda of standard for entry level mechanicals. Same for Miyota, or any of the Chinese movements. And most are usually adjusted to a tighter specification, and in practice, most day to dayuse, these movements accurate enough. A mechanical watch will require a small adjustment every once in a while.
