Handling the Gérald Genta Minute Repeater Golden Obsidian | Live from GWD26

This is a new dial with the Minute Repeater we covered in 2025. All other aspects of the watch remains the same. The case, now in 40mm wide, 9.6mm thick yellow gold case is unchanged. The iconic cushion shaped case is also retained, with the discreet lever on the left side of the case which activates the minute repeater.

The dial takes the breath away. It is so unique and beautiful. Golden Obsidian is a volcanic glass that forms when lava cools incredibly rapidly, trapping pockets of air, gas, and iron in the otherwise jet-black obsidian. Technically Golden Obsidian is not a stone, but has a distinctive earthy tone and looks stone like. The appearance looks like layers over layers. The cabochon on the crown is also of the same material, and without the brass base of the dial, it looks almost transparent.

As a result, the wear impressions are the same as with earlier examples. The 40mm lug to lug wears like it should. The lugs extend almost straight out of the case. On my wrist, which for those not familiar is 180mm and flat, it wears perfectly.

The sound of the repeater

The recording is done in the lobby of Mandarin Oriental Geneva, so there are some background noise, but the sound of the striking is quite clean and clear. The pace is deliberate and well paced. Click on the image below to hear the striking.
