The Altiplano Ultimate Automatic 910P has been in the existing Piaget ultra-thin collection. This is a specialty of Piaget, a trait first seen in 1957 in the caliber 9P, which has a thickness of just 2mm and is manual winding. In 1960, Piaget released the 12P Automatic, with a height of 2.3mm. The Caliber 910P was released in 2018, and was then the thinnest automatic watch, with a case which measures only 4.3mm high. This same 910P movement is the one powering this novelty.

What sets the 910P as revolutionary is the use of two interesting construction ideas to reduce the thickness. The first is the use of a periphery rotor, in the 910 this rotor runs on ball bearings. This technique is not new in 2018, but Piaget was probably the first to successfully execute the movement with good power reserve. And the second is to use the case-back as the main plate for the movement. This “trick” was first used in the AP bumper automatic C. 2870 released in 1986. It was also used in the Jean Lassalle ultra thin movement measuring only 1.2mm thick in the 1970s. In the Lasalle, the top bridges were removed, making a flying configuration. However, this movement proved unreliable and the movement was only made from 1976 to 1979. Lassalle was sold to Seiko, though the technical rights to the ultra thin was acquired by Lemania.

The Altiplano Ultimate Tourbillon was first released in 2024 as the Ref. G0A47507, also in a cobalt alloy case.

What is new

What is new with this release is the khaki green dial colour-way with a yellow gold case. The use of yellow gold is the first time this metal is applied to the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic range, and somewhat of a rarity in Piaget. In the current collection, only the Polo 79 is offered in yellow gold. The Altiplano Ultimate Automatic collection currently sports a total of 6 references, including this new khaki green novelty. The other references are in rose gold and white gold, and available with or without diamond encrusted bezels.

The entire face side of the dial is executed with the khaki green, including the dial displaying the hours and minutes shown with yellow gold hands. The peripheral rotor is in khaki green and slate grey. The HM display is actually part of the upper movement plate, and is a sub-dial located asymmetrically on the face. The khaki green treatment is also applied to the visible movement parts, including the balance bridge and plates holding the moving train. The entire wheel train, from the mainspring barrel, the keyless works and the power delivery to the balance wheel remains in a silvery finish and contrasts to the khaki green upper bridges.

As is the custom for Piaget, the watches in rose gold is priced lower than the ones in white gold with yellow gold commanding the highest premium in gold cased watches. This novelty follows this concept, and in ascending order from rose gold to white gold to yellow gold, the pricing for the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic rises from CHF 34.4k to CHF 35.5k to CHF 36k respectively. This pricing methodology is somewhat unusual, as most maisons either present the various 18k gold options at the same price, or for some the rose/pink gold variants have a small premium, and in others white gold has the premium.

What remains unchanged

What remains unchanged from the other members of the Altiplano Ultimate Automatic is the rest of the watch. The 18k YG case is 41mm in diameter with a thickness of 4.3mm inclusive of the crystal. The caseback is solid with the Piaget Coat of Arms and the case has a water resistance of 20m. The strap remains alligator, now in matching green, and comes with a YG pin buckle with the Piaget logo.

Altiplano Ultimate Concept Tourbillon

The same differences and similarities for the Ultimate Automatic Khaki Green applies to the Ultimate Concept Tourbillon Khaki Green. The only difference is the dial colour, but the case material remains the M64BC cobalt alloy measuring 41.5mm. This is exactly the same as the 2024 release.
